We finished dinner near by and retired to my car to commune. This is 7:40, show starts at 8. We see a guy walking across the parking lot with a Chinese takeout bag and a purple hat.
I said, "guys, I think that's Steve Gunn!"
My passenger agreed, so they say "Invite him in and we will turn him on!" But we are in my Prius and there are already four of us, so foiled again by the
Prius.
So we finish our activity and head around the side of the building to the rear entrance. Rounding the building, there sits Steve Gunn eating his Chinese out of a styrofoam container. The boys thought this was hilarious and started knocking me since it was my idea and how we are going to be the only ones in the show. We got settled in the balcony after a confusing period with ticketing and getting beer. Who is sitting in the booth behind us? You guessed it. This is where my buddy starts calling him 'the ninja' because we can't figure out how he got up there before us, giving his dining and all. Finally, just before the opening act came on, I hit the head and as I am leaving, who else, but Steve Gunn is staring at me as I exit the solo bathroom.
Oh yeah, he played well also. All acoustic, but one of the guitars had a pick-up and he was using pedals to make some cool things happen throughout. I still like his album, but he needs a band to make it more dynamic since he is very atmospheric. He uses finger picks and has an Indian quality to his style that sounds a lot like a sitar or 12 string. Without a bass line, it can get pretty repetitive where you are just sitting and waiting for the chord change.
that is all.

Of the four other people there I knew and hung out with, all were Lockn vets, too!
I highly recommend the 3 CD album "It's Great to be Alive" from a three night run in 2015; the accomplished purpose was to capture a live show.
They are in Charlottesville tonight and later touring with TTB and Marcus King.
Erica Widderstrom opened; she was pretty good. Formerly of the Heartless Bastards.

Friday night DSO in Charlottesville. All JGB show since Eaton was out. Good times indeed and a killer show. Back to Lynchburg after show.
Back to Charlottesville Sat. night with my daughter for our first Jimmy Buffett show thanks to miracle tickets from StillLifeStillDead. Much appreciated brother. Exceeded our expectations. Solo version of Little Martha in the middle of the show (not sure by whom) was the highlight for me. Back to Lynchburg after show.
Makes me tired to write this. Totally. Worth. It. Quality daddy/daughter time yesterday. Much needed for both of us...
Ghost Light in Roanoke Wed., hope I'm up for It...

Steve's show was about 2 hours to a sit-down audience mostly over 50 years old. He had The Mastersons (H&W duo) play the whole time as an integral part of the band.
The first half was all of Copperhead Road (30th anniversary) and frankly I’d rather he had left out a couple to bring some more either from early works like Hard Way or Guitar Town, or later Terraplane, Mountain or Townes. But after Road he played a good range of tunes from those sources. His stories were good and politics fit in.
They did a killer “Hey Joe” and showed their jamming chops on that and a couple of later songs. He played some good ones from his latest album, including the title song So You Want to Be an Outlaw (Smosey Wales), drawing deeply from Waylon.
His next project is a Guy Clark album—that will be awesome.
The Mastersons as an opening act was not very good; her voice is good but was he was on a sad acoustic guitar and looked rather foolish when he tried a couple of guitar slinger moves with it. And they both looked like a Saturday Night Live skit or The Mighty Wind. But I'm no fan of acoustic acts anyway (cf Bluto in Animal House).
But they were awesome when they jumped in with the Dukes and really filled holes that the band could not have managed. Chris played great electric (and about a dozen of them) and especially bottleneck, providing the lead that Steve didn’t bring and the pedal steel guy was too busy to fill in. Her voice and fiddle added much to it.
Catch this tour; he's winding down at the end of the summer. He's also touring with Dwight Yoakum and Lucinda Williams.
I spoke to him afterwards and mentioned seeing him at Lockn; he said that is one of his favorite fests so I took it on myself to invite him back. I hope that's OK with everyone.

Not signed unfortunately, but hope y’all have a good time! Weather is really nice for it.
We took our toddler to the free Lil’ Smokies show last weekend and had a good time. Hope to see them again soon.
