I have no experience with more recent shows so hopefully somebody else will chime in and inform us.
They are a band that I always come back to and listen to an album or two and think, I should listen to mmj more
Edit: just went back and looked at the setlist for that 08 show, they only had two guests Kirk Hammet and Zach Galifanakis. My memory isn't the best, expecially those times at roo.

I'm super excited they'll be at Lock'n this year and you all should be too. It will be a fun set.

One thing I've heard is that MMJ is not a big enough band to headline Lockn. I just don't get that. I've been pretty far inside the Dead bubble for a long time, but MMJ is a band that has been around a long time with a very wide following. They are popular among jamband fans, etc. Just because I hadn't listened to them (much), well, that reflect on me instead of them.

I would also agree with your impression on this. MMJ has played some premium slots at Bonnaroo on a number of occasions, and have certainly earned enough stripes to have one of the 16 headline slots at Lockn'. I actually like the fact that they are on the bill - they are a band I haven't seen enough of over the years. I am also one who has been in the Dead/Phish bubble over the years, but appreciate an opportunity to broaden the horizon with something different - I even enjoy an occasional EDM act here and there at a fest. Variety is good :-)

I'll admit, it took me a while to get in to them, but I'm now a huge advocate of MMJ.
There really is something for everybody with MMJ. Evil Urges was the album that got me hooked, but it seems like everyone starts somewhere different. In other words, do not dismiss them if you don't like the first few songs you hear. If you're completely unfamiliar, I suppose the "hits" to start with would be Mahgeetah, One Big Holiday, Wordless Chorus, Off the Record . . . all great tunes, but there is much, much more to this band.
Do you like classic rock? Of course you do - try Aluminum Park, Outta My System, and I'm Amazed.
Are you a slow crooner? Check out Wonderful (The Way I Feel), I Will Sing You Songs, and I Think I'm Going to Hell.
Do you occasionally get weird? Perhaps more than just occasionally? I do and I recommend Victory Dance, Highly Suspicious, and Holdin' on to Black Metal.
