Who gardens?

I kind of developed gardening as an interest in mid-life. I started about ten years ago just raising a few herbs in pots on the deck for use in cooking. Then I grew a few pepper plants in pots. Then a raised bed, etc. Then I moved and took a year off. Last year we just moved into the house the first of May, so I only had time to slam in one raised bed. Last year was the first year I started primarily from seed.
We enjoyed lots of spinach, kale, and lettuce (overwintered the spinach and kale, the lettuce started this spring). I've picked a bunch of garlic as well. Everything else is up but most of it not ready yet.
We have tons of tomatoes set, we have 30 plants of 3 types. I've got a few peppers set. The broccoli is up and growing fast. Not sure when it will be ready but soon. The cucumbers are growing well, but aren't anywhere near ready. Same for the winter squash (acorn and butternut). All that is growing well.
The ones that are not doing so well: I have a bunch of beets that got a good number of the leaves eaten before we got the fence up. The zucchini all looks good but is not setting fruit at all. I am not sure if they are just too crowded w/ the yellow squash or what. I don't have a good handle on the fennel, as I've never grown that before. It looks OK.

But I do garden--I'm in the house my mother grew up in, as did I, and she was a top gardener. Some of the plants I call "legacy" I believe were my grandmother's, including some cool lilies and a big gardenia.
I used to grumble about doing chores in the yard and acted disinterested when she tried to teach me stuff. She'd get a little exasperated in my lack of enthusiasm. But it sunk in and now I see it as honoring her and Dad as I keep things going. Meanwhile, my children grumble and I don't get why they aren't interested....

My yard is a little sun challenged. We have an acre which is partially wooded along either side. The back yard (1/4 acre) is fenced and for the dogs, so we have some flowers back there, but no vegetables. The clearest part (the middle) of our front yard with the best sun is mostly taken up by the septic field. I would not be able to do much more than the four beds I have and those all have enough sun to grow successfully but it is not optimal. I can compare my neighbor's garden, which is almost all sun and it's growth rate to my own and see that he is getting more growth faster. nonetheless I got a good bit of tomatoes last year and I have a lot of vegetation this year and plant set.
I am a little disappointed with the fruit set and growth on some parts of the garden this year. The broccoli head I harvested was small (and I will need to get the rest off in the next week or so). I was a little late getting these in and they are starting to bolt. Broccoli rabe if I don't get them off now. I still can't find any zucchini set and I have tons of yellow squash set but maybe not showing the kind of growth I hoped for. There may be a couple reasons for this. I may have my plants set too tight (one of the advantages of raised beds is being able to grow pretty compactly but this still has limits). I may also not be feeding them enough.
I fertilized today when I got home from Bristow, so we will see if that shows some results soon.
The tomatoes, peppers, and winter squash are all looking very good. I am hoping to have some tomatoes before the first of July.
