Welcome to the Lockn' Forum - The home of the original Lockn' Music Festival family!
It's interesting how among the country voices there was the fondness and sweet spot for mothers, including the prison songs and most important, Will the Circle, and then there were those whose mothers ranged from cruel to neglectful and many "who done r-u-n o-f-t". Of course that's not confined to the country music world but it's sure shows up there a lot. Speaking of mothers (and avoiding invoking David Alan Coe/Steve Goodman) I wish they had given a nod to Jerry Jeff's "Redneck Mother" when they discussed "Okie from Muskogee". One of my favorite college bands always played those two songs as a medley. "History of County Music" last night featured the singing cowboys, Bob Wills, the introduction of the pedal steel, the ASCAP/BMI issues, and the Grand Ol' Oprey. And as has been the case in the first episode, the Carter family weaves its influence throughout the story.
Tonight--Hank Williams!
It was a strange juxtaposition when I flipped the channel from that show to Glastonbury 2017 and Foo Fighters. The documentary keeps insisting that all American popular music is derived from country/blues (and how close they are to each other) but sweaty growling Dave Grohl didn't seem to be affected by it!
ETA: The Hank Williams was outstanding and those amazing songs he just rolled out like taking dictation from God. I think his birthday was yesterday. Died at 29, a very tragic figure, and no where near his peak.
Also great Chet Atkins, one of the top guitarists of all times; Tubbs, Flat and Scruggs who changed the music by playing it JRAD speed; Kitty Wells starting the "strong woman" aspect with It Wasn't God who made Honky Tonk Angels. You'll recognize the tune; it's written as a reply to The Wild Side of Life and is taken from "Blues Eyes" and "Great Speckled Bird".
Tonight I think they will go into Johnny Cash and Elvis.

But popular country has always tracked pop music styles, just several years late; lots of the country in the 90's had some disco feel; later the bro country was just hard rock with lyrics about trucks; a few years ago when I happened to hear frequently pop country I was appalled to hear rap/urban creeping in. I think we'll hear about Waylon and the "outlaw" sound being criticized as not country enough. Every year at the CMA (which is always the worst music) someone says "it's not real country like it was 10 years ago" but they've said that every year for 40 years!

Also Marty Stuart is heavily featured--he is a real student and historian of the music as well as a good musician; I commend his recent album Saturday Night/Sunday Morning--a double CD set where the first (Saturday) is raucous bar music and the second (Sunday) is church--also raucous!
Riannon Giddens, of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, also featured, is very knowledgeable about the music, culture and historical path of both, with interesting view about how the banjo, a "black" instrument, is now seen as a "white" instrument due to bluegrass (she doesn't say this in a bad way). Recent article in Smithsonian about her.

Rhiannon Giddens is awesome. She just played here in Asheville on Sunday nights. The tickets went on sale the Thursday of Lockn' and were completely sold out by the time I tried to get mine a few hours later.
