Welcome to the Lockn' Forum - The home of the original Lockn' Music Festival family!
Welcome to the board and thank you and your wife for what you do! I don't know about all the Yardbirds but I expect one so we have a prominent name from that time and style, and Lockn' has always hearkened to those roots. Last year it was quite Clapton-y; what muse beckons this year? You two will be ready to blow off some steam in June and this is the place! Please note: This forum is in no way officially associated with Lockn' Festival or its promoters.

Have any of the rumors involved Bob?
I heard Bob will be playing Saturday night in cut off jean shorts and he will bust out the Yellow Dog story.

I doubt anyone ever attacks anyone on here. It’s really open & welcoming. I’m new too. And I’m a fellow educator, so I know the struggle & the reward. Nick Mason would be awesome. Anything Pink Floyd related would go over great. And I could see Jeff Beck grabbing Derek Trucks or somebody to throw a Yardbirds Set too.

If for nothing else, to pull the lever and spin the stage on Phil again during the donor rap. Maybe he can stand by, so if Phil's not playing well with others, he can spin him off--kinda like the Gong Show.

I still hope it’s “The Q” w/ David Crosby but I’m on the fence if Herring’s gonna be there. If not, I doubt it’s Mule w/ Phil, maybe a stand alone Mule set at another time, but i bet it’s Phil & Friends w/ Warren & then Crosby on vocals. Maybe Jackie Greene, Grahame or Scofield on the other guitar. Weir would fit good there too. Then Barracco & Molo to round it out.

I think Crosby will get his own set for his own material. Plus a set with Phil. That set May be mostly Crosby’s material too. The Family Band plays tons of covers & they could do an awesome set together. Crosby & Jackie Greene or him w/ Elliot Peck would be great vocally. Crosby & Phil worked on that one album together so there’s some material they could do together there. I think Phil may play more of others people music at Lockn. Maybe that’s what he does with Jeff Beck too. Maybe Phil’s in his band doing his material. Jeff Beck can play anything too. I get it’s a stretch, it’s just the rumor I believe. And it’s something outta the box that you can’t see anyplace else which is Lockn’s M.O.

I agree with most of what you said on Crosby. I’ve never heard Phil do a whole set of covers but i’ve Seen sets with 4-5 covers & 3-4 Dead tunes many times. There’s enough Dead tunes & cover type tunes for the Phil/Crosby thing to happen. I feel ya on the popularity of the album thing too, probably just 1-2 songs off it if any. I’m just going off rumors i’ve heard. I think Crosby will get a solo set in the afternoon on Saturday, plus a lengthy 4-6 song sit in with Phil. As far as Beck, it’s wacky and hard for me to wrap my head around how it would work. But, it’s intriguing and maybe he’s just a solo act or does something with Trucks or Mayer Superjam style & hes got nothing to do with Phil. It’s just the dude on here that said it seemed sure, like he knew and other things he said have been regurgitated back to us from other sources. Maybe it’s bullshit, but it was the first thing I heard that I liked the sound of. That’s why I’m feeling Jeff Beck. And they gotta have somebody, most acts on the headliner level are already booked or committed elsewhere. They gotta put asses in the seats with somebody & Jeff Beck would do that. So final answer on Beck is a solo set, plus another thing with TTB or Mayer and a song w/ Phil. I don’t know how to bet that, but I’ll buy you a beer regardless brother. We can drink it & talk about how wrong I am then while we’re jamming to whatever they end up having. Or we can rage some Hanson “MmmBop” back at my camp & get wild. I’m always down meet new homies.

The 3 big guitarists (and another lesser known one before that) do not do much with the Yardbirds or the material once they moved on. A little dabbling maybe, but setlists show that the guitarists don't do much on that music (they had a variety of interviews and interview questions, and an occasional limited spurt of music on a few reunion tracks, RnR Hall of Fame, etc. But the guitarists just don't do much on the Yardbirds theme. Unfortunate, but they all had so much else in their career. Beck is the best candidate to relive that music, but not too much on that.
HOWEVER, Chris Dreja and Jim McCarty carried on a nice band under the Yardbirds name in the past decade or two, and they did scorching concerts with new members of short or long duration. Very good guitar work by others, in the same blues rock tradition, largely playing the classic solos the big three created. Some little debate on whether that was/is a cover band or the band carrying on, but most fans highly respect this effort by two original members and the rest new members. Chris has stopped the touring for health reasons, Jim carries on with his band. They do a very HOT set of Yardbirds songs, with a few originals from the last 20 years thrown in. They tour to this day - we just saw them in the fall in a small venue, and their show blows you mind for any guitar and Yardbirds fan. If you know the songs, it's a true gift what they perform.
What I am trying to say is, Yardbirds carrying on their tradition rarely involves anything from Clapton, Beck, and Page. I write this long tribute to update folks and out of great respect for "the other ones", McCarty and Dreja, Relf who has passed, and Samwell-Smith who left the band in their prime. It would be really weird and unlikely for Beck to put on a big Yardbirds show, BUT, McCarty's band is still active under that name, smoking hot, and well able to carry that venue for an undercard slot. Beck could sit in with those guys (and should more), but his own Yardbirds set would be way out of character.
Sorry for all the nerdy Yardbirds talk, I'm a nerd on this topic. I LOVE the topic, and would love to see the Yardbirds get an undercard slot at Lockn. Go see them if they play your local area at a small venue!!! Wear your earplugs and bring your air guitar!

Hell yeah dude, I love when somebody is passionate about a band and is willing to educate me. That’s a ton of good info & a well informed perspective. I appreciate that stuff. I love to talk music & stuff. And you sold me on checking out McCarty’s band for sure.

I’m really excited to see what Lockn brings. They have peaked my interest this year more than years past. And might I say that all the fine ladies & gentleman on here have made all the rumors, speculation & wild guesses so much more fun to discuss & disect. I’m so glad to be on here. It’s a 1000 times better than other social media alternatives. Big shout out to the people who make this board happen and all the people who contribute & keep it interesting. You guys seem to be a real family, and that’s the best part of music, the people you meet. It’s the whole “Strangers stopping strangers” thing. From TOO & Smosey on down the line. You guys are the real Lockn MVP’s. Thanks
