You all have to check out Portlandia's episode from last week--#602, I think. Three interlocking skits deal with music festivals (featuring the Flaming Lips). It's a lot of fun and my wife, who doesn't go to fests, loved it.

Portlandia is on the IFC channel, and I'm sure you can find "reruns" including on pay per view.

I listened to Flood too. And most of Apollo 18. And quite a bit of Lincoln.

On the local big band radio show last night, a couple of cuts from Jimmy Johnson 1928, that reinforced my theory of the connection of "jam bands" to jazz, especially styles similar to Dixieland and also early bebop. Johnson was Chicago stride piano blues, but with an east coast side to it. But what struck me on the song "Mournful Tho'ts" was his use of what is known in the Allman Brother's jams as "the Dickie rise." A bridge that is a series of rising notes, the band uses as if climbing up out of a hole. Came to be when they were writing Jessica, and didn't know how to get back to the main melody after the piano coda, so one writer said, just bring it up!" In many later ABB jams you'll hear that same "rise" now that you know to look for it.
