Good Ol' Grateful Deadcast podcast. If you enjoy GD minutiae, as I do, this is the podcast for you. They delve in to the 50th anniversary of both Workingman's Dead and American Beauty and spend an entire one hour episode on each song of both albums. Listening to the episode covering Box of Rain. I did not realize that on this track Phil plays acoustic guitar, Jerry on piano, David Nelson on lead guitar and  Dave Torbert, also from New Riders on bass. Billy played drums and Bob sang harmony, no instrument. After Jerry and Bob had recorded one of their three harmony tracks, Phil went back and erased one of them and used his voice to record their parts. Only one time, on Sept. 17, 1970, did these same artists perform Box live at Fillmore East.

I was fortunate enough to be at a handful of "famous" Dead shows and one of the most famous has to be the breakout of Box of Rain at Hampton on March 20, 1986. The song hadn't been played for 750 shows and when they started we all went nuts. I didn't realize at first what a big deal this was as it was my first of many Hampton shows and I had only been on the bus for about 4 months. I caught on pretty fast and my seat "on the bus" was occupied for the next 36 years (and counting!).

No, originally "breast" meaning the angry heart of a person, and later misquoted to refer to calming wild animals--although the same imagery works because an angry person is like a savage beast. Nothing to do with indigenous "savages"(sic).
