The Boston Rag - Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, and Duane Allman - 1970 radio broadcast. The sound quality is horrible on the songs, but interesting. The 30 minutes of an interview with Duane Allman is worth getting the CD. Been listening to Allman Bros "A&R Studios New York Aug 26 1971" and then Derek & the dominoes Live at the Fillmore (Oct 23-24, 1970) both acquired today at a yard sale with an incredible collection of at least 500 CDs for $1 each. ETA that Derek/Dominoes is outstanding. I was disappointed not to see Duane on it--I thought he played a few gigs in addition to the album--so it's just the four but the jams are outstanding! Lots of different directions within the songs; certainly not a "greatest hits" show even though the songs are familiar. Highly recommend it. And the Gatemouth (Dirty work at the Crossroads) is 1947-1953. Good roots. Last night was the anniversary of Benny Goodman's Carnegie Hall concert 1938, so it was played on the radio on our Saturday Big Band show. Funny how you tune in to a radio broadcast even though you have the album. Anyway, not only is this one of the greatest albums ever (tying ABB Fillmore East), it represents one of the roots of the jam bands we love--which is why I hate the term "jam band" and cringe when I have to say it. There are other live recordings from back then, when they did not restrict the song length to air play or vinyl restrictions; this one captures what happens when great musicians who play well together get in the groove. For example, Jess Stacey (piano) was given a nod by BG to wrap up Sing Sing Sing but he took it down, noodled around, brought the song back up, and then revived the whole orchestra. And while doing so, Gene Krupa (drums) was just striding along like Kruetzman or Butch Trucks. If you don't want to listen to the whole show--and like "our" shows, some parts are kinda lame--just find that version of Sing Sing Sing and concentrate on the exchanges among the musicians as they transition from their slots. Even that version was a blend of Sing Sing Sing and Christopher Columbus--know any other bands that combine songs? I am coming to believe that the source of the big band jam function was Dixieland--go find some early Sydney Bechet and see if I'm right. Ended up also with Bonnie Raitt, Robert Randolph, another ABB and a Dickey Betts, Room full of Blues, Stones, Omar and the Howlers, Nighthawks, Gatemouth, Dazed and confused and Oscar Peterson Trio. And a 2 volume music book of ABB.

Little known fact. XTC is without a doubt my favorite band. But what about... Nope, it's XTC. Which is why you'll get an argument from me if you are so uninformed as to say that all pop music is crap. I love their music and it is absolutely the definition of pop music.
