If you aren't new to pulling a trailer, get off I-64 E on top of Afton Mountain and take 250 west then about a mile right onto 151 South to 6 south (east?) to Rt 29. This cuts off almost 40 miles and is very scenic, but 2 lane and sometimes winding. Puts you 7 miles north of Lovingston which is the main landmark town for turning off to Lockn, although they use a couple of ways in off 29. We are first timers looking for the best route to Arrington. Sometimes I wish mapquest didn’t give options. Ha!
We are also looking for a hotel at midpoint as we are breaking travel in to two days.

As one who avoids I95, I would take I81 south to Staunton, VA, (exit 220 iirc), go east on I64, take exit 118 (rt29 south) and that will take you directly to Lockn.We are first timers looking for the best route to Arrington. Sometimes I wish mapquest didn’t give options. Ha! 
We are also looking for a hotel at midpoint as we are breaking travel in to two days.

I am absolutely going to check in to 1-81. Finding a reasonable hotel midway is a challenge but we are willing and able to go off the beaten track for that. (Harrisburg is about midway and a bit pricey.)
I, also, would love to avoid I 95!

About 20 miles beyond Harrisburg is a town called Carlisle. It's a big trucking hub and there is a strip of truck stops and more affordable hotels/motels there, just off of 81.Happy Memorial Day and don’t try to get on any driving sites! Oh, geeez! So many “try again later” messages.
I am absolutely going to check in to 1-81. Finding a reasonable hotel midway is a challenge but we are willing and able to go off the beaten track for that. (Harrisburg is about midway and a bit pricey.)
I, also, would love to avoid I 95!

Yes, it is. We caught DSO in the pouring rain at a venue about a mile from there a couple years ago. There's a horse show venue near there that hosts small, local fests too.
