This will be my 5th/6th Dead & Co show. To say this revival is my favorite is an understatement. The music feels the same and the crowds keep getting bigger and better. This revival has awoken something in me that has been dormant since 95 when Jerry passed. With all that said, all my friends are married with kids and are unable to come. But I'm not letting that stop me. I've decided to drive down solo from Fairfax, VA and will be going the car camping route. Obviously I have a ton of questions and I know the festival site has a lot of answers. But I want to hear from those who have been and currently going. Please help a fellow deadhead out with my questions/concerns below.
Me: 3 day GA Ticket pass and car camping pass
How much space is there for car camping? I was going to bring a tent, canopy for shade, 2 chairs?Shower situation? Is it open to everyone or just VIP?
Shower situation? Is it open to everyone or just VIP?
Will they still give me a car camping spot if I arrive Saturday afternoon?
How far is the camp spot from Shakedown Street?
Any stores nearby?
Smart to go alone?
Must haves/essentials when car camping at a music festival?
Dos? Donts?
Now that I'm posting of course I've forgotten my other concerns. But I will post them when they come to me. In the meantime, please feel free to chime in with any info or advice.
Is it pathetic I'm going alone? I just saw them in Raleigh this past June and that wasn't enough. The music keeps calling me. I want to enjoy and cherish Bob while he's still kicking.
Thanks and peace and love.

How much space is there for car camping? Car camping spots are about 420 sq. ft. or 15 x 28 (approx.)
I was going to bring a tent, canopy for shade, 2 chairs? Plenty of room for this.
Shower situation? Is it open to everyone or just VIP? GA showers are pay showers, $10 I think?
Shower situation? Is it open to everyone or just VIP? Asked and answered
Will they still give me a car camping spot if I arrive Saturday afternoon? Yes
How far is the camp spot from Shakedown Street? Just gotta poke around...
Any stores nearby? Yes. food Lion in Lovingston
Smart to go alone? Hells yes, not a problem. Very many new friends waiting to meet you.
Must haves/essentials when car camping at a music festival? locknforum.com/thread/46/ultimate-festival-checklist
Dos? Donts? Do have fun. Don't bogart that joint, my friend (not that I condone the use of substances which may be illegal in the state of VA)

However once you are in you can't drive back out to the store. If you aren't coming until Saturday you won't have as much to pack in.
You will likely be closer to the stage area, which is where the food/beer vendors are. There are "shakedown" vendors in the stage area and also far away up the hill (if we have last year's config, which is always iffy). There is no informal shakedown like at shows.

Not sure what GA camping shower situation is.
If you get there Saturday I am sure you will get a spot though i suspect it won't be primo.
I don't know where Shakedown will be.
Food Lion about three miles north of Lockn on Rt 29 at the Lovingston stoplight.
Smarter to go alone than not go at all.
Must have: money, beer, sunscreen.
Don't: bring in any in any glass containers of anything.
you will have a totally terrific time.

I don't know your specific situation but I do have the following things going for me:
1. My brain is a non-stop circus. I can't remember the last time I was bored or lonely, whether people were around me or not. As stated above by The Other One, there are plenty of good folks around to talk to, but even during those rare quiet down times, I am fine being left with my thoughts for however long.
2. I am married with two young kids. So most of the time my wants and needs come dead last on the priority list. Going to a festival solo for me is 4 days of unbridled selfishness--I can do whatever I want whenever I want--no responsibility and nobody to answer to about ANYTHING. It's good for the soul.
So is it pathetic? Perhaps, but if you do it right you'll be having too much fun to care what anybody else thinks. And honestly, they'll all be having too much fun to even notice whether you're there solo.

The whole festival is Shakedown and Lockn=Love. You’ll only be alone if you want to.

Poke around the tips and tricks threads and similar to find some clever campsite bathing devices, too. I haven't seen people get nekkid in the camp area--and not for lack of trying--so you'd want either a privacy tent or structure, or just wear swim trunks.
Plus if you are arriving Saturday afternoon, you will more likely find yourself hosing off your fragrant neighbors rather than your own self!

These sets, from those I have never seen or heard of, to TTB and D&C night caps twice in a row, are going to blow my mind, in the best possible way, so that is reason to be there, for certain.
Sun screen, and stay hydrated, I DO NOT want to be in the first aid tent for those China Rider opening notes! Doot doot...do doot do doot.

I've been to all of the Lock'n Fests so far. I can tell you're anxious about all the unknowns. Embrace it. You'll figure it all out when you get there, so don't worry your pretty head about it. The festival site is large enough for everyone, which can't be said of all festivals.
Re: space for a big setup... A car, canopy and tent take up a fair amount of space, but you'll be able to squeeze them all in assuming your tent isn't too big. You're guaranteed a spot. It may be on a bit of a hill, so keep that in mind. A little table is helpful. Bring tapestries or sheets to hang on your canopy for a degree of privacy and sun shading. A couple waterproof tarps are good to have as a ground mat or protection from sideways rain.
Re: festival site getting around... I bring a bike to cover the longer distances, rush back to campsite mid-afternoon or to find a porta-potty with shorter lines in the a.m.
Re: stores nearby... Yes, but don't bother to buy food. Festival food is way better. Freeze a bunch of water bottles for your cooler (keep them unopened and you can bring them into the music grounds). Coffee is the one thing you'll want to DIY in the a.m. cause the lines are long and not likely near your campsite. Some cereal or something cold for breakfast. Don't want to waste time washing dishes.
Re: showers... NEVER assume you'll be able to get a shower at one of the shower spots. I've been every year and I've never even seen them, but I can guarantee the line will be long and it will be disgusting. A huge waste of time. Hang a shower bag under your canopy and DIY. I bought a pop-up shower a couple years back and my friends won't go to a fest without it. Wipes for swamp ass is a must.
Lots of Tapestries/sheets for your canopy are HIGHLY recommended to have a degree of privacy nude or not, plus the sun can bear down in the late afternoon. Also, it can be hot at night, so bring a couple sheets for your sleeping bag cause you won't want to be in it. Blow up mattress or cot makes all the difference. With a cot, you don't even need the tent.
Re: safety & security... Lock stuff up in the car. Make friends with neighbors and keep an eye out for each other's camp sites.
Re: coming alone... Never let what other people do or don't do affect what you want to do. Even the best friends will bail on you at the last minute. Make new friends at the fest. You got it right about seeing Bobby and other members while you can. In the 80's & 90's I saw a lot of old jazz guys who are no longer with us. Always place a priority on seeing the old guys over the young bands. Be sure to be up front for the 'Foundation of Funk' set. Those are some of the jazz guys... legends I'm talkin' about. George Porter, Ivan & Cyril Neville, et al. Don't be too stuck in the land of the Dead to the exclusion of other bands. The Dead built a foundation that will carry on. You're a witness to it at Lock'n.
Re: Relief from heat advice... I bring a canopy chair and a hammock into the fest. The hammock is primarily a sunshade that I drape over the canopy. A white sheet would work as well.
