Welcome to the Lockn' Forum - The home of the original Lockn' Music Festival family!
I feel like LOCKN punted this year with their line up. They have a thin Headliner list, underwhelming 2nd tier bands and a lot of stuff that just isn't worth the price or the trek for people coming from outta the area. Each year this festival encounters a set back or suffers from poor planning, but each year they still seem to put on a good show & make the best outta what they got or get stuck with. Whether its Neil Young cancelling, entry lines, the campground distance, the heat, Bob Weir & Furthur not happening cause of his shoulder, the micro burst wind storm, canceling the entire Thursday, rain, shuffling acts, etc.....there was always something but they always seemed to pull it off and give the people what they cam for and I appreciate that tremendously. But this year with FloydFest in their backyard with a great line up, Peach Fest (despite the logistical nightmare that is camping or festying at Montage Mt.) has a fire line up with solid headliners and a stacked 2nd tier & 3rd tier, the 2 WOODSTOCK festivals the weekend before LOCKN & all the other big tours this summer I feel like LOCKN had to really impress to put asses in the seats, and what they put out today ain't gonna do it. Each year since year 3 or 4 they seem to have continued to scale back the venue and have failed to capitalize on the site and its true majesty. The race track set up while a nightmare hike for alotta of campers was a great set up, RV'S on the hill could see and hear music, the forest was lit, the extra triangle/forest stages and a big thing was the late night shows were outside the main entrance so you were more free to party and bring your beer/liquor to the stage. Since those years they seem to have crammed people into the bowl that used to be for late night or a into a smaller field we used to park in. While I understand logistical changes for security, profitability , etc... it seems they never truly flush out an idea but rather just scrap last years model and wing it from year to year. Since this is one of the only festivals that is truly a one stage, one band at a time, no ever overlap event then I expect more. At High Sierra there's music all over the town & fairgrounds, they got a main stage, a secondary stage, a barn & more, Hulaween has the big stage in the field, the natural amphitheater thing & spirit lake, Peach has multiple stages all day, Del Fest too, so does Wanee and more. LOCKN used to start the day with bands that headlined smaller stages at these festivals. This year that's not the case. Gary Clark slays it, JRAD is an epic experience, Chris Robinson Brotherhood puts it down, I love Fruition, Pigeons, Revivalist, Twiddle, Vulfpeck & Nahko. But Trey's Band headlining even with Derek Trucks needs something else after it, main stage or late night that is impressive. Trucks will kill it, they'll do some covers, jam and duel on guitars and next night Trey will give TTB all he's got, probably some Allmans, Dead and Phish in that set. I've seen Trey sit in with Derek Trucks before they are good together. I just wish they had another act after those on Friday & Saturday or a headliner with a better light show. That's a big thing for me, SCI, Panic, UM, STS9, Phish, Dead & Co., etc.... I like the lights when I'm raging all night. Bob & Wolf Brothers are good, I saw them in Louisville & Chicago. But I don't know if they are 2 set headliners, to me they are a chill laid back band that is made for late afternoon like 4:00 or 5:00 or put them at 1:00 on a smaller stage. I wish they had Phil with a heater line up like he used to play with, Mayer, Dead & Co, Furthur Reunion, a bigger tribute and especially String Cheese, Widespread Panic, Umphrey's and something we've never seen before, not something that was at the Beacon last fall. I'll prolly go still. I'm gonna hit Jazz Fest, Floyd, Peach, a half dozen Dead & Co shows, what ever Colorado run SCI does plus the Cap in May plus whatever comes to me locally and I'll definitely do 1 of the 2 WOODSTOCK things, whichever one is for the Heady Kids and not the CHAD'S. But as someone who loves LOCKN, The Farm, The Fam & the Music I just wish they would brought out the big guns. And the event has never been "cut in half" in any dimension. Very few people know the real deal on the finances, and it's not just revenue minus expenses that tell the story; the financing and investing is a big, secret and confusing component. Not only that, unlike the "sell the tickets/pay the band" component, the financing component has changed through the life of the event. If a fact-specific rumor about attendance, revenue, profit/loss, cost or even ownership happens to be correct6, it's only a function of luck. But let's not get confused; let's listen to the music play! And the event has never been "cut in half" in any dimension. Also, in the past, they have moved some late-night bands to earlier slots.
There will be shuffling.

I was hoping for Mule too. Weird, especially considering Susan is there.

“Unfortunately, the festival has never been profitable and this year the promoters were forced to make major changes,” writes Chief Curtis Sheets. “The most significant change was to cut the scope of the event in half. Reducing the scope opened the door for other vendors to bid on the services we typically provide.”

We talked today about this years line up and came to the same conclusion. It’s a little lukewarm, but very comfortable; like ones favorite pair of old jeans. We are definitely looking forward to it.
Although we are totally stoked about seeing Gary Clark and Galactic on the bill, being acts we really dig, we are a little confused by Gary Clarke playing a Thursday slot, and Galactic being at Garcia’s instead of The Big Stage. But regardless, we are grateful they will be there.
Party on!

I realize a lot of folks are like, "meh", and I get it. I felt the same. No SCI, No Umphrey's, No Panic, No D&C. But... I see the vision looking at the artists here. You've got some incredibly unique and amazing potentialities going on.
JRAD is there for Thursday, and this is the only festival you will see that band as a headliner. And it's a slot they deserve, although some see them as a GD cover band, they are not that. This is a super-group that plays Grateful Dead songs, much of which is because those songs are so ... fluid ... for use of a better word. Jerry once described them as loose-leaf binders that you could pull pages out of and stick in other ones. And those guys don't try to do much of anything that the Dead did with them. They've just discarded all of that and stick in their own pages, and just bring that music, OUR music, forward. And they are real artists with it.
Anyway, it's really a super-group that has done a lot of other stuff. Joe Russo is just an amazing drummer (they don't NEED two), Marco Benevento (seen him solo? WOW), Scott Metzger and and Tom Hamilton are both premier guitarists, Dave Dreiwitz (of Ween fame) is an excellent base guitarist, and one of the few that can keep the baseline going for the rest of them. I really hope they are going to stick around and join in with some other sets. The Oteil and Friends set especially, which is likely to blow everyone away (Oteil of course plays with JRAD sometimes when Dreiwitz is on other stuff). So much win.
TTB has been at Lockn' a lot, and finally a headliner. Might be the only festival with them headlining, IDK, but they are selling out shows everywhere. Susan is arguably one of the best artists of our time, her singing has always been stellar, but lately she is also shredding on the guitar on par with Derek. And here she will be THREE NIGHTS at Lockn'!! Doing sets with Trey and Bob Weir. Yea, Weir has done sets with Susan/TTB in the past, but it's ALWAYS freaking wonderful stuff! We know she will show up for other sets, like she did with Phil (SAVING his set from embarrassment, IMHO, in 2016). And Trey with Derek, a rare treat which can freaking blow your mind.
And that's just a TASTE of the POTENTIAL sitting there on this lineup. It also looks like they are going back to their roots with main field stuff through the main shows (WHY do we need a 2nd stage???), and then free-for-all byob late-nights up at the forest. And look at THOSE acts. Galactic (OMG so long since I've seen them), Soulive (Woooo), even Circles Around the Sun are fun as crap! Who knows who might show up there. The first year it was Phil Lesh at the Triangle.
I have a feeling that this is going to be a once-in-a-lifetime event, on par with Maddogs and Englishmen back in 2015(?). I imagine a lot of folks checking out the recordings after this fest and going "DAMN! I almost went to that festival," but, they just didn't have enough big-ticket-selling acts to get me there (more dancing room for ME .
So, yea, I'm psyched about it, more than I was at first. Pidgeons, YEA, Twiddle! (screw you Twiddle haters), Melvin Seals, ALLMAN BETTS, (OMG) Keller, well he IS THERE (??)!!
