Anyway, I loved the first Weir set personally (and really loved the 2nd), but I knew at least the first would test some of the different view points. First and second sets could both be in the mellow category (no unannounced additional guests, and Susan was laid back guitar-wise). We all have to admit, there was plenty of Weir stand up comedy (tuning, trying to send Susan off early, etc.).
Not a bad idea for a Sunday festival closer when you think about it (high quality, rock icon/royalty, and high demand still), and keep Sat. night the rave-up.
Anyway, my real point was to say that the Wolf Bros. rhythm section are really thumping and focused on any song, and I love Bob's guitar tone. That clearly was one of the purposes when this band was organized. The Bo Diddley beat for Not Fade Away on Sunday was as good as any I have ever heard. So my vote is "winner". But I understand there will be many varying views.

Tl;dr: Bobby loves his slow and deliberate. The Wolf Bros are a side project for him to do what he wants. He probably played worse last night because he was at a festival for 4 days, but they were never going to give you Venetia ‘72 even if he was on his game

It was an interesting strategy to end with a headliner and on a quiet note. Nothing is going to keep a large chunk of the crowd from leaving Sunday evening. This wasn't the year to sell day tickets. I think they rolled with the reality of a soft ending and had the best one possible.
Although I was hoping for Marcus King....

I recall at L2 that the rumor was out for weeks (months?) that ABB would play Fillmore East but it wasn't advertised or even announced IIRC. But Mad Dogs and Jefferson Airplane were advertised heavily.
The unannounced surprise will bolster the festivals' reputation, keep people talking after the farm is empty, and will be good capital for next year--that's the only thing I can figure.

I’m gonna quibble with this take. IMHO, It’s a brilliant move. It’s a loud “TRUST ME” (and a subtle Eff You) and it worked. He endured six months of “you have no headliner” and then knocked us all out. Creating a brand that everyone will FOMO is hard and necessary. And it’s not feasible to hire DeadCo every year. (I remain convinced that Michael Lang prevented it this year) So there has to be something that draws the crowd. I spoke to Shapiro Sunday morning over breakfast. He stopped at my table to say hi. It was a brief exchange but I came away convinced that he was very pleased with what went down AND how it went down. TOO’s right that announcing it would’ve sold more single day tickets this year. But that’s chump change compared to the future sales. Because now those on the fence will always have to wonder what Pete’s got up his sleeve. I thanked him (he returned the thanks), congratulated him (smug grin returned) and told him he knocked the cover off the ball Saturday night.

Totally agree. And now there’s no excuse for DeadCo not playing it.

The last set had a different sound to me. I was up front, but left the field a few songs into the set with Susan. I was cool with the slower tempos, but something seemed out of tune and it became more apparent when Susan came out. I wonder if she was in standard tuning and perhaps? he left his tuner set for one of the drop tunings? When they soloed, the sound was ok as the higher strings seemed in tune, but in the rhythm sections of songs something was off where the lower strings were involved. That is why I suspected the drop tuning issue. There was one song they put their capos on and the dissonance became shocking to me, and that's when I left. Lot's of folks were having the time of their lives, so I decided to Fade Away back to camp to sit under the stars for a while and enjoy from a distance. All good. Great festival, just something seemed off with the sound of the last set. I'm sort of surprised the techs just didn't make a hard equipment change right away, but maybe their monitors only give them the single instrument and not the blended sound. or maybe I'm all wrong. I'm curious if you perceived the same?
