I’d love to see Trey & Page as Phil’s Friends for one night, Vida Blue on the Late Night stage and a GRAB reunion would be stellar.

Outside that, a lineup of Phil, Trey, Krasno, Page & Fishman would be stellar. The Terrapin Family Band w/ Derek Trucks would be good. I’d love to see Phil, Kadlecik, Jackie Greene, Marco & Russo together too.

If Phil’s out, I could see Billy & Kids one night, Bob & The Wolf Pack and hella Oteil & Friends Set (Maybe even with Derek & Warren) on the lineup. Maybe even Mayer w/ JRAD still. But I bet they all pass.

I disagree. There’s probably a reason the Raleigh Show & Charlotte Show are almost 60 days apart. Now I could see radius clauses being lifted for other Live Nation Venues, but not outside of that family. Dead & Co is managed by Irving Azoff & has a deal with Live Nation. If the “market” has a Live Nation venue, that’s what they book. The only none Live Nation venues they play are in Markets without a Live Nation option, I.E. Colorado. Shapiro probably had to break the bank & spilt the gate to get them 2018. While Acts managed by Red Light, Madison House, Jamflow, etc... may waive clauses or ignored certain contract language, Irving Azoff is not. That dude is gonna maximize every dollar he can get for his talent, and that’s why acts hire him. They could sell out any place for 3 nights on their own, why would they play Lockn & spilt the pay day with 20 other bands??? If your Azoff or Live Nation, there’s no incentive to hire out your acts. They’ll sell fine on their own, they don’t need exposure & aren’t trying sell a new album. For a none LN Venue to book them, they’d probably have to pay through the nose before they even got to paying the band. I agree for “Heady Bands”, radius clauses may not be as big a deal the next 8 months, for them it’ll be about getting to as many places as they can and any payday, even half a payday is worth their time. But sadly Dead & Co isn’t a “Heady Band” anymore, they’re more like Beyoncé when it comes to business management than they are like Bill Graham.

Any way the open dates in both D&C and Phish at Lockn' time are more likely to bring members of those acts rather than the acts themselves, is my speculation. Fare thee well, anyone?

If they were to book a Headliner for 3 nights, an opener for them, maybe a local late night band in the campground... that would be vastly more profitable for the promoters & Nelson County.
Phish could sell 25K-30K tix for a weekend with the lack of NE shows on the tour.
Dead & Co could sell 20K tix for a two day run, have the side projects like Billy & The Kids, Wolf Pack, Oteil & Friends play the 3rd night.
Widespread Panic could probably pack 15K for a 3 day run.
They could do an SCI/UM weekend with Keller opening, that probably gets 10K-12K.
A TTB/ Gov’t Mule weekend, a JRAD weekend, maybe The Avett’s, a Bluegrass set up with like GSBG, Salmon & The Dusters playing sets each day. Even a Twiddle & Pigeons pairing with like Spafford opening would probably pull close to 10K people.
Even DMB, Mumford & Sons, Kings of Leon or somebody more mainstream would do well there too. They could get Farm Aid, or just have Neil Young for 3 nights, 1 w/ Promise of The Real & 2 with Crazy Horse.
The more I see bands having “Insta Sell Outs”, the more I think this would be viable and better for the area & the bands.

I would really only see it happening this year as way to get the most money that they could. But to answer the questions:
1.) I don’t think Lockn is anymore special than any other place. Suwannee has multiple events there & there was no magic lost at Wanee cause they held Hulaween. The thing that separates Lockn is the collaborations & tribute sets. You can’t get those other places, that’s what makes it special, not the show field. My loyalty is more to the music than the place. An “If you build it, they will come” sorta thing.
2.) As for prior ticket holders, you just give them full refunds, because circumstances changed & the event as planned will not go on. I mean, if Phil isn’t playing 3 nights in October, they’d have to bait & switch anyways so just a full on cancel wouldn’t be the craziest thing. If it’s not gonna be Phil then IDK what’s gonna please everybody, so they’ll be in a tight spot anyways. People are bitch, moan and act like they’ve been mistreated regardless.
3.) If Arrington, Virginia had more nights of good music, then I may plan more trips there. I plan each summer for the last dozen years or so around the 3rd Weekend in July for SCI at Red Rocks, doesn’t matter that I see them 20 other times a year, it’s special when they have a hometown thrown down. It’d be the same at Lockn, let the Jambands have a home on the East Coast that is an event destination multiple times a year. With Weed going legal, all the breweries & whiskey distillers, they could make it into a good thing. If you could pencil in WSP every Memorial Day Weekend, Phish in August, something to compete with Peach & Forest for the 4th of July, a Bluegrass weekend in June & then Lockn Proper over Labor Day, you could maximize the venue, make everybody happy every year, hell even have a Ween weekend if they want it LOL..., then still have the big deal in September with all the Collabs, sit in’s, tributes & stuff that makes Lockn a premier event.
That’s my take on it.
