Right from the start I thought of vinyl as a medium that could be vastly improved upon. Scratches and warps on the vinyl, plus a whole catalog of mechanical and electronic distortions from the turntable. I skipped 8 tracks and the smaller cartridges as they were even noisier and no more reliable than vinyl.
So when CDs really started getting going around 1988, I decided to replace my 20 year vinyl collection with CDs. They didn’t wear out over time and the only noise on them was as-recorded on tape at the studio, but they were still subject to scratching if mishandled.
Now, although I have all those albums and CDs (which my children are appropriating), I’m strictly digital. One can play a song a million times and not have it degrade, nor do you have to the replace the needle, cartridge, and belt. The only noise on them is the original tape noise, which is sometimes for good reasons not cleaned up.
BTW, here is an excellent book by a recording engineer on the role unintended noises inherent in analogue tape recording played in our favorite old albums.
