I have been meaning to brag about the newer black keys album. It is much more bluesy and not as blown out on the amps as previous albums. I liked a few songs previously, but could never listen to a whole album. Dan Auerbach is awesome. I wish this tour was coming closer to Raleigh than Charlotte.

On Phantasy Tour’s board, somebody said they’re gonna add Chimenti & Jay Lane to form the supergroup “Meat Sauce”… I’m sure it was just joke but “if they build it, I will come”.

I think The Revivalist are a borderline “Jam” act. They have the chops, musically, to get down, I think they wanna go down that avenue, but are restricted a little by their commercial success. I’d love to see their lead singer front a band like String Cheese or Widespread one night for a set of Doors Covers or something.

Meanwhile, the country, pop and rap, maybe EDM, can do it, and no coincidence that there is corporate radio/streaming to support them. Our musical niche here is exactly that--a niche. It can't power a major event other than through a well-selected card of quality lower-tier acts. I also don't see the major grass bands rising to that level; Old Crow had a shot, perhaps, at one time. But the draw needed to fill a festival, or even a shed, is several of those acts together, not a single act with an opener.
Personally, that suits me. But I--we--are not "the market". And I think this year's Bonnaroo list bears this out.

I strongly agree with everything you said. I look at “our bands” in 3 categories.
1.) Bands that sell out Sheds (Phish/ Dead & Co)
As long as Dead & Co has Weir & Mayer, they’ll still fill sheds, Krueztmann isn’t a deal breaker for ticket buyers.
2.) Bands that sell out Red Rocks & can do 3 night runs in large theaters. This would be Widespread, String Cheese, Tedeschi Trucks and soon to be Goose & Billy Strings.
Caveat to this being String Cheese, while they don’t fill sheds or anything near 10,000 outside of Colorado they do headline & curate the two biggest festivals of the year, every year with Electric Forest & Hulaween. No other band really does that. They are “THE” Festival Band in my opinion.
3.) The 3rd tier are the theater & auditorium bands that can fill Red Rocks on a double bill, your Twiddle’s, Pigeon’s, JRAD, etc…
The thing that really made Lockn great wasn’t the headliners by themselves, but rather the one offs that get out together. Layla, Furthur w/ Trey, Lettuce’s JGB Set, JT Taylor w/ Cheese, Zac Brown, The Airplane Thing & probably the best of if all Mad Dog’s. Without that, there’s not the draw, because I can see all the bands in my market for $50 instead of $400 and I can sleep in my bed with A/C.

I've always wondered if those guys are doing well, or if they are just getting by.
Like those three you mentioned if it ended tomorrow for them would they need to find jobs or could they retire.

“Doing Well vs. Getting By” is a matter of perspective. A guy with no family living in South Bend, Indiana making $150,000 a year is living way better than a guy with a wife, two kids, student loans & a Long Island, Austin or Bay Area mortgage.
That said, I’d say that tier 3 level prolly makes $200K a year or so. A guy like Russo may make more cause he can be a “hired gun”, or Dave from JRAD makes Ween money, some guys get song writing royalties, etc. So I’m sure there’s guys that could get by, depending on age, marital status, etc… I’d say most would need to work to some degree unless their music was picked up as a commercial jungle or something.

This from a reddit 3 months ago...
What_jam_bands_are_financially_successful
Tier 1 - never need to work again, unless you've fucked up your finances (Dead, Panic, Phish)
Tier 2 - well off, can afford to bring the family on tour and pay for nannies for the kids (Umph, SCI)
Tier 3 - Working Class. Is making enough to not need a 2nd job, may even own a house and a car that isn't completely falling apart. However, they are frustrated with the industry because they are still essentially getting robbed. Their work creates millions in revenue for owners and managers, but they're realistically making between 40-60k after taxes. (I won't share a specific example because I know a few people in bands of this tier and don't need to air their business. You can assume for yourself who qualifies as tier 3)
Tier 4 - Probably just starting to make enough to quit their day job, but also may not have the expenses of "normal" people due to living in a van. After tax is looking around 15-30k. (Any band that is currently opening for bands like Goose or Spafford)

On speculation about Peach: Doom Flamingo but no UM? Midnight North and no Phil & Friends(I know Midnight North is touring) but come on let Midnight North drag Phil around for once.
