Welcome to the Lockn' Forum - The home of the original Lockn' Music Festival family!
Lake Street Dive put on a great show last night in Norfolk. High energy and tight performance, a new light show that added, with Rachel Price front and center dominating but in a good way. You could still hear how strong her band members are, and each got some solo time. But it was largely Rachel's show. Lots from the new album and healthy dose of the first album. One of my nieces who hadn't seen them before said she really liked them because of "a powerful girl, like Susan (Tedeschi)." I told Rachel after the show how much we all loved her performance with the Jefferson Airplane tribute and hoped to see them all at Lockn' this year and they said they'd love it! Mikela Davis opened; very young but interesting music, sounding some like 10,000 Maniacs at times. She is a classical harpist and had this big honking harp on stage which she mixed in well with her rock music. The show was sold out and packed from the beginning, with a wide range of ages and genders. There were a couple of women singing every song, off key, behind me, so now I know how the girls feel at the Robert Earle Keene shows! This is what they played and who played it: Dead Air at The Paramount Theater, Charlottesville, VA, USA I know you'd love this band--watch for them in your area or come down to Leven 27 at VaB! ETA I learned that sometimes their set list is from a GD show, as DSO does. But these guys don't play like DSO--true to the GD versions--but they aren't as far off as JRAD is. They take the familiar and freshen it up some, but also look again at that set list--some real nuggets in there. Please note: This forum is in no way officially associated with Lockn' Festival or its promoters.

KDTU Eat a bunch of Peaches was the top act IMO. Pink Talking Fish was so bad it was funny. Trampled by Turtles was right up there too. Ghost Light was my surprise and they have a new fan in me.
It was my first festival with Laura, and her first festival ever sharing that with here made it the most best festival experience I have ever had. She’s hooked! She said when we were driving out, “when is our next festival?” With all we have to do to get ready for our wedding it looks like it won’t be until Delfest 😀

Mad Skillet is already booked for Sweetwater 420 and I think they will be at Lockn' plus many other fests this summer. My friend talked to Medeski after the show and tried to get him confirm that they will be at Peach and Lockn' but was unsuccessful.

I brought Andie Bee's sticker, scotch tape, and 4 different days of countdown signs to try to get a picture for the forum. The 4 days of forum countdown signs were in case I got a confirmation of a Lockn date so I had the proper image. The first part of the plan was to tape the meet & greet sticker to the front of Holly's keyboard which was just a long lean in and then take pictures of it during the show. I got right up next to the stage and was surprised at the age of the some of the crowd in front of Holly Bowling. While I was trying to casually tape the sticker onto the keyboard I noticed the older guy next to me waving at Holly sidestage. I asked him if he knew Holly. He told me he was her father in law, we had a nice conversation, and I then aborted my sticker taping plan so I settled for a crappy hand held pic. There were many people(relatives and friends) there just to support her who probably never heard of Ghost Light. It was quite difficult to lustfully stare at and drool over Holly while her In-laws were on either side of me. I had to chuckle at the FIL filming Holly amongst a handful of younger Bros surrounding him doing the same thing, phones out and only filming her not knowing they were filming over the MIL's head.
I went into the show hoping to use the line I lifted from an Aquaman movie thread on a jam band forum: "I'm glad the Aquaman took time from making movies to play bass for Ghost Light"
Unfortunately Steve Lyons(bass player) wore pig tails for the show I saw and it ruined the Aquaman thing but the bro next to me saved the evening when he called Steve: "Hippy Longstockings".
Almost forgot my fashion review. THam was resplendent in his hat, scarf, and jacket covered with in an appropriate amount of "flair". Holly is as always the Zuckerberg of jamband fashion in her Maoist cap and black tank top. Raina looked like a teenage girl returning from horse camp(not judging). Aquaman has been covered. Scotty the drummer, can't say I ever looked at him so no critique.

this show at Lockn(2PM SAT). It was a very nice venue and was less than half capacity probably due to weather conditions and I was able to
roam around to better seats. The second half of the second set of the show I ended up in the balcony side stage dancing my ass off with a 14 and 6 year old(guessing at ages) who joined in with me. This pic is from me lying on the carpet of the balcony during Otis Day and the Knights Shout mix.
We were the only balcony dancers but there were some flapper dressed women dancing somewhere.
The show was exactly what I hoped for: Watching youtube videos live with some different performers. Video Killed the Radio Star as Queen really showed off the bands chops much better than the video and Cunio was MC. For $25 I got my value back easily in the first set and was satisfied with my purchase especially after the first Tap dance solo. I wasn't sure how I would feel about the tap dancing, I like it on the videos but live?
Face melted. Unfortunately as a tap dance newb I probably got too excited early on because there was plenty more dancing. Not bad but watch the videos and you'll know exactly what your in for. Will do again.

The stage was right in the middle of the arena and shaped like a big X with the drummer in the center of it. The other guys would kind of take turns moving around to the various different parts of the stage and Hetfield had a mic on each side. So sometimes he would be singing looking in your direction and other times he'd be singing with his back to you. Good way to make everyone in the place feel like they were in on it.
The production was something else. They had lights, they had fire, they had pyrotechnics, they even had a bunch of small drones flying around above the band on one song. And instead of one giant screen they had a bunch of small screens that looked like individual TV's that would show different graphics and move all around. Was pretty cool.

Kyle Folsom, of Woodwork, the "Jerry" role, is particularly outstanding and I bet we see him with some of the collabs.

The set list is interesting because they mix things up and put in some rareties, rather than stick with the "top 40" you usually hear in a bar-level cover bands. Really nice jams and very well coordinated. Lots of "I didn't know the Dead played that!"
The female singer is great--better than Donna, of course--and she sings a few that would have been a male voice, which I find a very welcome change. Her Smokestack Lightning was killer, and Pride of Cucamonga was a real treat:

Jonathan Wilson has been around a little while, he produced all the Father John Misty albums as well as some Head and the Heart. He toured with Roger Waters in 2018 as a guitarist and vocalist. I have posted it here before, but here is a show from the current tour:
Lockn': not dying, still Dead
