Welcome to the Lockn' Forum - The home of the original Lockn' Music Festival family!
welcome aboard! There is a lot to be said for staying on site as part of the experience. Traffic getting in will be heavy on Day One but as of now, they are starting the music late so you could arrive in the afternoon and miss the crush. Traffic is heavy Sunday night leaving. Have you driven the road between Lexington and Arrington (Rt 56)? Great in the daytime; hairy at night and long two-lane no passing stretches. Route 60 would be a little better but I don't see 45 minutes (Lexington to Sweetbriar used to be an hour even by an anxious 20 year old male in a '68 Mustang!). Might be easier roads to commute from Lynchburg (Amherst) or Charlottesville and there was a Lynchburg bus last year. Start on the closest side of town. Make reservations now. 1. It's about a 10-15 minute walk to the stage from the daily lot. We're local so we tend to leave once a day. No problems getting back into daily lot any time other than the first day. 2. Music has started between 12-1 most days, iirc. Thursday I think they said is 6 this year but we will see. They will announce all this shortly. 3. It's an open field and not far at all. Plus they have the big screens. But like PP said the setup is new this year. We've never had an issue and stand toward the back anyhow since we bring the kids. 4. First day I would park ANYWHERE in the daily lot, even if its far back. It's easier to park and walk past the giant line of cars waiting to get in than to get trapped in the waiting line. If traffic is like previous years there is a long line of cars getting in. The next day you'll be able to park really close to the main entrance. They search your bags at the entrance, so be smart and no glass. You can't bring alcohol into the venue so find a buddy to stash your beer at their camp if possible. There really is no problem with leaving and coming back. We generally have one vehicle parked in camping and one in the lot just so we can leave easily. The earlier you get in the closer you'll find parking in the daily lot. There are several towns closer than Lexington with hotels. Just be careful, and sober leaving, because there are a ton of really nice police officers doing their job. If you have any other questions, you're welcome to message me. Please note: This forum is in no way officially associated with Lockn' Festival or its promoters.
First timer questions
Post by press on Jul 4, 2016 20:06:46 GMT -5
1. Roanoke is 84 miles from Arrington, VA. I will likely stay closer, but how easy is it to get in and out of the festival once it starts? I am probably going to stay in Lexington which is only 45 miles. How much time (roughly) do you think I should give to get in each day and out each day?
2. From the area where they allow lawn chairs, is the view okay? Or is it a long way? I think I recall reading that it just has to be behind the soundboard, but curious about your experience with chairs and viewing.
4. Any advice for daily commuters? Particularly first timers?
I camped on site the first two years and commuted from nearby last year. Getting in and out was very easy. In fact, after the first day, no one seemed to care where I parked once I got on site the first day. I might sleep in my truck this year if the weather is nice, I doubt if anyone will notice. It is a long long walk to the day parking area and you can easily get disoriented if you drink too much tea, so pick out some landmarks to find your ride.
I took a small camping chair and was able to sit and watch comfortably about half way back from the stage. You can hear fine and see via the vid screens. No one seems to care where you put your chair, but the problem is, if it's too close, you will soon become surrounded by people standing and then people will begin tripping over you, so best to plan on standing close for your fave bands and sitting farther back for the others imho. It's all good.

Just my 2 cents, but I stayed at Wintergreen last year and took the shuttle. Missed some of the music and much of the experience. Decided to camp this year. I know that if you drive yourself, you could leave whenever you want, so that is not an issue. However, I could not imagine driving those roads at 1am after a full day. Hell, I was freaked out in the bus. Anyway, give staying in site a serious thought. The late night sets atvLockn are pretty special.
