Welcome to the Lockn' Forum - The home of the original Lockn' Music Festival family!
Me too. didn't get it until now. Good term. Seems that to make everyone happy, one can be a Deadhead no matter when he started being into the Grateful Dead, so it's not an age thing--which no one can help. One cultivates the knowledge and appreciation. But the ones who start--and finish--at an over-produced pop song and don't even try to learn, but are just there "for the party", can correctly be called, disparagingly, a "touch head." It would be like someone claiming to be a Warren Zevon devotee because he loves Werewolves of London, and doesn't know any other songs. Same here. Although I wore out American Beauty in college (late 70's) and liked similar Americana songs (like Rider) I didn't listen to much else; saw one show w/ Jerry c. 1983, and became a big fan in the last 20 years, largely attributed to DSO shows and expanding appreciation for jazz and older bands like Allman Bros and newer bands that stretch it out. (This is just as to the Dead; I started very young into solid music while other teenies were into pop). I'm now there for the music; missed the party and feel like a chaperone at times. I also have the contrary nature to oppose what is trendy and popular. Often at my expense. I also have the contrary nature to oppose what is trendy and popular. Often at my expense. But in all seriousness, I agree. Number of shows, who you saw, etc. well Jerry said it in Morning Dew, "I guess it really doesn't matter anyway."
In the mid-70s I'd venture a guess that my hometown of Harrisonburg had more Deadheads per captia than most. I got into the music thru bluegrass and the New Riders, and by 1976, I was on the bus. First show ever was Blacksburg in April 1978 and last one at RFK in 1995.
My regrets are never making to a west coast show or Red Rocks. Seriously considering the DSO show at the Rocks this summer where they will recreate the show from 7-8-78 there 40 years to the date after.

I try not to watch TV shows until enough people with opinions I respect give it a thumbs up. Even then I'll wait for it to be cancelled so I KNOW it was good. There are exceptions, of course.
