Welcome to the Lockn' Forum - The home of the original Lockn' Music Festival family!
You are right that most of the booking happened months ago and the "look who we just got!" ploy is just marketing. However, the business also entails a lot of moving and switching and last minute deals and cancellations/rescheduling. I recall the interview with Trey where he said TAB/TTB was already booked before they decided to do Layla. The promoters know the set-up/expenses and are watching trends, perhaps more this year than in the past. It's no longer just "Pete having fun" even though he presents it that way to the public. Business minds and skills are running things. And it shows well IMO! Every year is different from the past. Some people in the business question (years ago) some of the inconsistency that works against establishing a brand for a new fest. Last year was challenging; Dead Co year was challenging. The real consistency is change. Or more simply put: Lockn's gonna Lockn'. You are right that most of the booking happened months ago and the "look who we just got!" ploy is just marketing. However, the business also entails a lot of moving and switching and last minute deals and cancellations/rescheduling. I agree with this. It’s either the budget opened up through ticket sales or cancelations or they heard complaints, listened, caved in & booked bands to appease the public. The Thursday Bands May have always been scheduled for other days or late nights & then they were moved to Thursday. But I think they hedged their bets, kept Thursday on the back burner, when tix sold well for it, they just added bands & they can adjust the price at the next level and make up for anything lost on early bird. Thursday outta be a $60-$75 tix based on those bands & onsite camping. I’m glad we got 4 days, but I think it was marketed & advertised as something else initially but morphed into a real show. I just wish they’d take the Thursday bands & swap then with the Late night acts. Give us Boombox & Gans for $30, and give us Marcus, DSO & Taz at midnight, so there’s a little heat on Neal’s Stage. I was hoping for a Grateful Shred late night, they’d play til somebody pulled their plugs.

This is the kinda stuff I like to hear. I’m still all in on the Jeff Beck thing. He fits the “TBA” slot, he may have a tour he’s waiting to announce & him doing something “album wise” or unique will be a huge sales bump. After “Layla”, people will get FOMO. I would. He’d be perfect to hold back. And that post that homie made about WH, JB & JM looks pretty good now. And he put that out early last week. That dude’s info has been solid as hell. JEFF BECK 2020!!!!!

Yeah, his info is always pretty solid and detailed. I've got this conspiracy theory that it's Dave Frey's son, based pretty much soley on the young Buck screen name. Ridiculous sure, but I still wonder

Lockn is extremely scalable...last year y'all got lucky as there was much more space than actually needed. At this point if they don't know exactly the set up/expenses, then they haven't been paying attention to their trends.

That's why you have 'holds' on time slots for these things. Hard holds are like 1st refusal and soft holds are backup. I guarantee you there were some killer under card bands for Lockn that got a pass. 4848 had like 3 holds on most timeslots....crazy.

I was thinking the exact opposite. I thought that since they had that Saturday off that it was good possibility that the “TBA” was both James Taylor & Jackson Browne. They don’t have many Saturdays off on that tour except out west. Saturday is big payday for them, their crowd is older professionals & retirees, that crowd don’t rage it weeknights. They have a show w/ Brandi Carlile on that tour too. And since they are upstate NY that’s not very long haul at all for them. They could do that load out & load in. JRAD is doing the same thing for Sunday, coming from NY.

I’d say the prime sit in spots for Weir are the Crosby solo set, the Oteil Set, Rail Road Earth’s solo Set, w/ JRAD ( they could leave Metzger out of a Set), of course The Q. That dude can fit anywhere, front & center of a set or in backing role for a set. I could see him play with anybody on the card. If he likes your stuff & ask to play with you, what are you gonna say “No” I’d say chances are high Wolf Brothers get added. But I’m not sure on the current state of Bob & Phil. Maybe they are salty w/ each other again or maybe Phil wants all the shine. It’s hard to say. To ask Mayer & not Bob as well, is kinda weird cause Mayer is Bob’s guy. Phil took Kadlecik from DSO to hurt them & help Furthur, maybe he’s eyeing Mayer for the Family Band or a big “Friends” tour and this is the start of the “coup d‘etat” that Phil’s pulling on Dead & Co. The Phil & Bob dynamic changes too often to keep up with. Both bands booked NYC for Halloween, stepping on each other’s toes. Maybe we won’t see Bob.
