A huge part of their talent is in the lyrics--pure southern Gothic like reading Faulkner or O'Connor. Many of their songs have repeat
characters, or different versions of the same story. Listen to "Go Go Boots."
So if you don't know them, get to know the lyrics before hand b/c the vocal are often muddy live.
Also, the two front singers (and writers) Hood and Cooley have very different styles and sounds, so it's like hearing two bands
trading off songs.
Grace Potter also comes here a lot and is never missed. Not for her sake, but it was kinda nice when she wasn't so well known. Picture
Grace Slick, Tina Turner, Janis Joplin and Dusty Springfield rolled up in a tasty bun.
And visually? She moves it like a sack of bobcats.
I love Del McCroury for the historical presence.

2. Freeman.- I'm so curious on how Gener is gonna be post Ween. New album is solid so that's a good sign. Different but still good. Hope he still hits us with his Ween stuff too.
3. Taj Mahal.-Love him but never seen him.

Since Bonnaroo they've really seemed to grow and win over fans all around the South.
I can't recommend them enough, but they (to me) are definitely a live band. I've listened to their albums and it doesn't seem to quite translate. If you give 'em a chance, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.
As long as I make it to the venue in time, I'll be there.

(These are the only artists on the list that I listen to on a regular basis)
---------------------
Drive By Truckers

Freeman
Grace Potter
But good lord all mighty are the Wood Brothers underrated, they're second to My Morning Jacket for my favorite band of the past decade.

Also, I saw The Wood Bros. open for Tedeschi Trucks 2 weeks ago,and they made me smile too! I've got a feeling my face will be sore after Lockn.
