Almost four hours of music for less than $30 and with $5 PBR tall boys and free parking. Walk to the rail any time. Top flight musicians all in tune and in synch. Vocals for Bobby, Jerry and Phil perfect. This is the way to see Grateful Dead music.
LFD is a Virginia based band that appears around the mid-Atlantic and is a project of musicians from other bands. I like the way they hand some male vocal songs to the female, and unlike the Donna disaster, this young woman had talent, soul and presence. John K is the big league with both talent and soul (unlike that Wonderland thing). do not miss this band, especially with John. He made the show sublime but they really pull it off well without him.
This is way above your local bar cover band. You have DSO which is museum quality perfect of what it was. You have JRAD which is top talent of what that music should sound like today with time's progression. This is why you cannot compare those two (with Mcjeff's authority, so there). LFD lands in between. They manage to keep the soul of the GD but iron out the wrinkles (example the bad harmonies).
No bad show ever opened with…

Pride of Cuckamonga (female vocal)

But consider this: in the early 70's I paid about $7 for shows including top bands like the Stones, almost all general admission. I peg inflation/today's dollars to put that at $70 (10x factor generally)
I suspect history would show that except for things like Shea Stadium the typical show size was smaller. Our arenas were 10-12,000; sheds are now 20,000 and up. Lots of 40,000 venues now. Or were the giant shows more common? Or notable exceptions?

Altamont Free Concert Security and Hells Angels Motorcycle Club Oakland Chapter Founder, Sonny Barger, Dead at 83
Today it was confirmed that Sonny Barger, the founder of the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club Oakland Chapter, author, actor, convicted felon and businessman, died on Wednesday of liver cancer. He was 83 years old.
Barger penned a letter before his death that was shared on his Facebook page upon his passing. The message reads: “If you are reading this message, you’ll know that I’m gone. I’ve asked that this note be posted immediately after my passing. I’ve lived a long and good life filled with adventure. And I’ve had the privilege to be part of an amazing club. Although I’ve had a public persona for decades, I’ve mostly enjoyed special time with my club brothers, my family, and close friends. Please know that I passed peacefully after a brief battle with cancer. But also know that in the end, I was surrounded by what really matters: My wife, Zorana, as well as my loved ones.”
Sonny Barger was born on Oct. 8, 1938, in Modesto, Calif. and became recognized as the Hells Angels Oakland chapter grew throughout the ’50s, and became widely associated with the countercultural movement, during the following decade. The Oakland chapter of the Hells Angels had a close relationship with renowned Bay Area rock bands including the Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane and infamously acted as security during the Altamont Free Concert, which became known as the end of the summer of love.
During the event, 18-year-old Meredith Hunter was stabbed in the neck by Hell’s Angel member Alan Passaro in front of the stage during the Rolling Stones’ performance. Passaro was later found not guilty but the publicity of the concert brought the Oakland chapter of the Hells Angels to national prominence.
Berger acted as the Hells Angels Oakland Chapter’s president throughout his life, stepping down in ’73 after he was sentenced to 10 years to life for possession of a weapon by a convicted felon and distribution of heroin, and in ’86 for four years for conspiracy to commit murder, after members of the Outlaws Motorcycle Club murdered Hells Angels Anchorage chapter president John Cleave Webb.
Barger was also known for his entrepreneurial spirit and is credited for trademarking the Hells Angels logo. He also acted as a consultant on novels and films about motorcycle clubs in his later years. And acted in Richard Rush’s film Hells Angels on Wheels, which starred Jack Nicholson and acted as Lenny ‘The Pimp’ Janowitz on Sons of Anarchy.

Zappa's one-celled hammond organism can be right complex.
Interesting that in sound reproduction we seek both clarity and distortion in a quest for realism.

and I'm reading some feedback based on this breakdown which says this band are idiots who spent way too much money they didnt have.
As for the split: The band's management company gets a percentage of the gate, as does the agent. The house usually gets the concession money. If the house charges a ticketing fee, it keeps that as well, so the band's ticket sales and the gross sales may vary widely.
I'm always surprised at the percentage of the take made up from merch sales. The merch sales of the band in the example was 29% of the ticket sales. But I know successful people in the business who focus on the merch and the peripherals--like leasing band buses and audio/visual, or ticket and merch fulfillment (Music Today at its onset). To make money in a gold rush, sell shovels.
The top tier acts simply get their $million per show regardless of sales but they are the ones sure to sell almost out. Drop down a few and it gets into the sharing.
I think, but am not sure, that a band playing a cover song has to pay a royalty but that may be all done through the ASCAP and similar programs.
Guests "sitting in" did not happen to be there; they get a flat fee, often based on the number of songs they pay.

THE PHUNK SESSIONS
FT. MEMBERS OF LETTUCE, THE METERS,
DUMPSTAPHUNK & MORE
A PHISH DICK'S AFTER PARTY
SUNDAY, 9/4/22
CERVANTES' MASTERPIECE BALLROOM
DENVER, CO
The Phunk Sessions will regroup in Denver, CO on Sunday, September 4th to tie a bow on Phish‘s 2022 Labor Day Weekend run at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park with a funky super-jam at Cervantes’ Masterpiece Ballroom featuring members of The Meters, Lettuce, The Motet, Dumpstaphunk, and John Mayer‘s touring band. Tickets go on sale on Friday, June 24th at 10:00 a.m. MT here.
A staple of the Denver music scene and beyond, Live For Live Music‘s The Funk Sessions series has been bringing rotating lineups of musicians together for all-star dance parties for several years. In addition to spreading to New Orleans for a special Funk Session during Jazz Fest, the series has cemented its place as a go-to Dick’s late-night since 2019 with an offshoot dubbed The Phunk Sessions.
The crew for the 2022 edition of The Phunk Sessions will feature a mix of funk luminaries and contemporary stars including George Porter Jr. (bass/vocals, The Meters), Ivan Neville (keys/vocals, Dumpstaphunk), Isaiah Sharkey (guitar/vocals, John Mayer/D’Angelo), Adam Smirnoff (guitar, Lettuce), Adam Deitch (drums, Lettuce), Eric “Benny” Bloom (trumpet, Lettuce), and Drew Sayers (saxophone, The Motet).
Even beyond the billed lineups, these shows have been known to attract unannounced talent and surprise sit-ins. Back in 2019 at the inaugural running of The Phunk Sessions, bassist Mike Gordon made his way to Cervantes’ after finishing up with Phish at Dick’s and wound up sitting in with the band on a rendition of Little Feat‘s “Spanish Moon”.
Tickets for The Phunk Sessions at Denver, CO’s Cervantes’ Masterpiece Ballroom after Phish at Dick’s on Sunday, September 4th, 2022 go on sale on Friday, June 24th at 10:00 a.m. MT here.

ERIC CHURCH
6/11/22
U.S. Bank Stadium, Minneapolis, MN
Capacity: 51,117
100% sold
Tickets: $54.50-$455
GROSS $9,519,167
This is the biggest show in the chart, number one, above three Paul McCartney dates. Why? MORGAN WALLEN! In order to do that business in rock, you'd have to have two classic acts, or acts that made their bones over twenty years ago.
As for McCartney, he played smaller buildings. He too went clean. But the top and lower prices were actually a few dollar less than Church's. This is not a diss of McCartney, this just illustrates how powerful country can be. Eric Church has been building his outsider status for over a decade, and he's definitely selling rock. And Morgan Wallen has the biggest album of
the past two years...
PAUL McCARTNEY
6/4/22
Camping World Stadium, Orlando, FL
Capacity: 42,662
100% sold
Tickets: $539.50-$428.50
GROSS $8,848,665
As for Mr. McCartney... People are now realizing that you've got to see the dinosaurs now, or they may forever be gone. That's the Charlie Watts effect. All the hosannas about Taylor Hawkins, but he was all doped up, taking his own life, albeit by accident, whereas Charlie was clean and the Big C got him. Hawkins was a very good drummer, but Watts underpinned rock and roll. And if Charlie can go...so can you.
KENNY CHESNEY
6/11/22
Heinz Field, Pittsburgh, PA
Capacity: 53,502
100% sold
Tickets: $69-$274
GROSS $5,569,182
The Jimmy Buffett of his day, and not only musically. Kenny comes around almost every year, it's a ritual to go to the show, doesn't matter if he's had recent hits or not. He's got enough hits, but he also promises a show, with new, impressive production every year. Sure, he had Dan + Shay, Old Dominion and Carly Pearce in support, but that was just making a day of it. Chesney could sell out stadiums all by himself. It's doubtful that Eric Church could sell that many tickets all by his lonesome.
EAGLES
5/28/22
MGM Grand Garden Arena, Las Vegas, NV
Capacity: 10,926
100% sold
Tickets: $99-$750
GROSS $3,717,639
Charge what the tickets are worth, that's how you beat scalpers. The Eagles are forever, at least as long as Don Henley wants to do it.
SNOOP DOGG
4/19/22
Denny Sanford Premier Center, Sioux Falls, SD
Capacity: 10,081

Snoop Dogg is a legend, around for 30 years already. To do these numbers in South Dakota is amazing. It's very hard to sell out in these Northern Plain states. Interestingly, the opener was Koe Wetzel, an edgy country rocker who most hip-hop fans have probably never heard of, you've probably never heard of, but he's got streams of 40 and 50 million on Spotify. And you wonder why you're not rich and famous on your million...

Let's forget the 1% unsold. Just imagine how bad those seats are, in the rafters...FOR A COMEDY SHOW! These barns all have bad acoustics, I'm stunned people will sit so far back to listen to people talk. But they will, that's just how hot comedy is.
<<the article then puts in a lot of comedy acts--and notes that you can tell jokes no matter how old you are; not so with banging and twanging and sanging. And low equipment costs>>

My e-mail has been blowing up with this band in the last month or so. They've been around since 2007, but they're not on a major label and they've never had anything close to a hit. Granted, this is Texas, acts sell tickets in Texas that can't get arrested elsewhere. But the Red Dirt sound could easily spread with the right commitment. It's like taking country to the U.K., you've got to invest, show people what they're missing. And this can't be done via a major label, Universal tried with Pat Green, this has got nothing to do with hits, it's a slow and steady build that pays dividends forever. This is the new music business. The Spotify Top 50, that hit business, THAT'S THE SIDESHOW!
Having said that, the Turnpike Troubadours' top ten tracks on Spotify all have double digit million streams. One even has 38 million. So, it's not just about live. But also know you can have this many streams and still be unknown to most.

I can't believe Carnegie Hall booked him. Who next, Harvey Weinstein?
This is a bad look. But an incredible number. Until you look and see three days later he only sold 47% of the tickets in a similar-sized hall in Philadelphia, only 1,292 people wanted to see him there. <<I think he got noped out of Lockn'?>>

A jam band, and not the most highly respected either, at least not by the older generation still going to see Phish and DMB, but the kids need their music too. The last album they had came out in 2018, and it was a live one. The band's success is not about hit records, it's not about airplay, it's about live shows, delivering an experience, that is different every night. They're throwing a party, the pop arena acts are giving a performance, and there's a huge difference between the two. See the hit act extravaganza and...you don't need to see it again, unless they've got another hit or two, and chances are they won't. Whereas Twiddle is a night out, you can own it.
So the lesson is not to shoot for the stars, but the road. And know that traditional success, being on the cover of magazines and all over the radio... Many magazines have gone out of business and all of their readership is down. Believe me, the target audience for Twiddle is not listening to terrestrial radio. So, if you're good enough, have good enough songs, you'll eventually get bigger and bigger. Otherwise, you can continue to do it as a job, making a living, until you get burned out. This is the old pre-recording paradigm, and it's back. You're in control of your own destiny, it's only you and your fans. No one telling you what to do. But it's your responsibility to bring people to the gig, not the label's, not the media's, your music is your sales tool, and it either resonates or it doesn't. Live is where the rubber meets the road, literally, but this is where your excuses evaporate. If you can get gigs and continue to build no traction, you're either far ahead of the audience or not good enough.
It's incumbent upon you to stick it out, you can complain all you want, but no one is listening. And some of the most talented have given up, talent is at most 50% of making it, most of making it is desire and perseverance. It's a long way to the top if you want to rock and roll. And it seems live people would rather hear something closer to rock and roll than what's in the Spotify Top 50.

I’ve had a running problem with atrial fibrillation for 10 years, and over the last eight months it’s been getting worse. I had a cardiac ablation procedure today, and I i’m home now and the procedure has worked as designed so far. My heart rhythm is normal as is the heart rate for the first time since November. This is great news, I’ve been trying to get this procedure done since November.
So whip up your love, vibes, thoughts or prayers - whatever generates your good energy, and send them on my way so that this fix will last for years. It is uncertain with these kind of things how long the heart rate will remain in normal rhythm, could be a week could be years.
I just wanted to share my good fortune with all my friends…
I have actually been cleared to go to the peach festival in two weeks!
Best wishes for speedy recovery and mended parts!
