Was looking at some MD&E videos & was wondering who they may have cover the horns? Maybe Tower of Power?

I missed the very beginning of the interview, but I did not hear any mention of filming.

I think I heard this too.  Early in the interview (I only heard the early part).

There is a great story about how this project was formed. Apparently back in the 60s in LA, certain circles of musicians would venture out to Joshua Tree Nat Monument to eat drugs, play music, and party down. There is a small motel that existed outside of the monument that a group would rent out for a while (this is also where Gram Parsons would soon OD on booze/pills/methadone). On one of these excursions the likes of Leon Russell, Gram Parsons, maybe some members of the Grease Band (including Joe Cocker) and others some how came to find their way out to the desert for a week. When it came time to put a new group together, Cocker would reference this chance occurrence of jamming and bam! Mad Dogs and Englishmen. I read this story in a book titled: Twenty Thousand Roads; The Ballad of Gram Parsons and His Cosmic American Music.

I just got the deluxe version of MD&E, released c. 2005, with lots more songs--one of the reasons I got it was for "The Weight." Worth it!

I highly recommend getting this version before the show.

As someone from that era, perhaps part of the appeal to us at the time was the way Cocker/Russell took familiar "pop" songs and wrang them out into rocking jams--The Letter and Bathroom Window are good examples. For the younger people--not criticizing--most of the songs you know from that era may be less obscure. Today, when Phish or DMB or WSP takes a familiar pop song and jams on it--that's the vibe.

I just watched the MD&E movie--wow. Highly recommend it before Lockn, or for those unfamiliar, to see what it is about. The variety of musical styles that Leon put together shows hi studio talent. What an event that was.
