Dark Star Brewery
Cyclists and Walkers are invited to join staff and customers of the Dark Star Brewery in Partridge Green on July 21st 2013 for a sponsored walk/run and/or ride around Sussex to raise cash for the Dark Star Foundation.
The Dark Star 24/7 is the first event to be run by the newly formed Dark Star Foundation and takes place on July 21st this year.
Anyone and everyone is invited to join the sponsored journey, starting at the Dark Star Brewery in Partridge Green, following a round-trip before returning to the Partridge pub for a BBQ and well-earned rest.
Cyclists will take on the 24-mile return journey to Shoreham, whilst walkers/runners will tackle a 7-mile route to Wineham, stopping for refreshments at The Duke of Wellington, Shoreham and The Royal Oak, Wineham before embarking on the journey home.
Monies raised will go towards ‘The Dark Star Foundation,’ created by the brewery to ‘Support & Inspire’ by working alongside, and helping, good causes. It will work in three key areas: providing funds to pubs to assist in their fundraising effort, provide seed funding for tomorrow’s entrepreneurs, issue funds to good causes / charities.
James Cuthbertson of Dark Star commented: “The 24/7 event is a great excuse to get out in the fresh air, make new friends and have fun, not to mention sharing a beer at the end of our spoils and raise funds for the Foundation”.
Adding: “What we’re asking people to do is pay £15 entry (under 16 free). For that, all adults will get a Dark Star Foundation t shirt, coffee on arrival and beer upon arrival back at The Partridge. Participants can help us raise further funds by getting sponsored, with all funds raised going to the Dark Star Foundation.
The safety of participants is vital, so for cyclists, we insist helmets are worn – no lid, no ride.

that I am soliciting pledges from my fellow lockneers. Send me a pledge of X dollars a mile. The best part is that since it's in England, I'm not going, so you won't owe me anything after the event.
But its the thought that counts.

Dieter Roth (Rot) 246 Little Clouds
246 Little Clouds is a book, from 1968, by the Swiss artist Dieter Roth, with an introduction by the American poet Emmett Williams. The main text of the book was written by Roth while on a freighter from New York to Iceland, his home country, and then sent with a note to Williams, with whose encouragement and collaboration the project was being made: “here are your little clouds, or rather my little clouds…you see i corrected them, but i leave that also to you…but do with or rather to the little clouds what you want by way maybe of interrupting interrupting corrugating meditating cut, kick, slap, flop, flunk, treat them in any nice little way….”
Williams chose to write out the “little clouds” on blank cards and send them back to Roth for illustration, and the book consists of photographic reproductions showing these cards with the artist’s images taped directly onto them. Due to a misunderstanding the plates for the book were over-exposed, resulting in textured pages on which the shadows around the taped additions are clearly visible. Subsequently Roth re-issued the book in a more ‘correctly’ exposed form, as part of his self-published collected works.
The subject of 246 Little Clouds could be said to be the creative process, described by Williams in his introduction as a “biological necessity… Art is what artists make, and they make it because they can’t help themselves.” The original book was published by The Something Else Press, New York, and was Roth’s first introduction to a wider English-speaking audience.

I haven't seen this or even heard of it but I may have to see it now.
Room 237 is a 2012 American documentary film directed by Rodney Ascher about interpretations and perceived meanings of Stanley Kubrick's film The Shining (1980) which was adapted from the 1977 novel of the same name by Stephen King. The film includes footage from The Shining and other Kubrick films, along with discussions by a number of Kubrick enthusiasts. The film has nine segments, each segment focusing on different elements within the film which "may reveal hidden clues and hint at a bigger thematic oeuvre." The film was produced by Tim Kirk. The title refers to a room in the haunted hotel featured in The Shining, which a character is warned to never enter.
Though King's novel and Kubrick's film adaptation depart in some significant details, they share the same premise. Jack Torrance, a would-be professional writer, takes on a job as the winter caretaker of the sprawling Overlook Hotel in the Colorado mountains. His wife Wendy and son Danny accompany him for the season, the child exhibiting a psychic power called "The Shining." Hotel chef Dick Hallorann also possesses psychic powers, and offers advice to the youngster about managing his unusual abilities. As the months wear on, the isolated family suffers from cabin fever and begin to experience paranormal events.
The film is told entirely through voiceover by people with different theories about The Shining. According to one, The Shining is about the genocide of Native Americans, because there is imagery throughout the film associated with the American West. For instance, cans of Calumet Baking Powder are noticeable in the background of two important scenes. Because a calumet is a peace pipe, and the cans featured the image of a Native American, one analyst believed that American imperialism was the subtext of the film, and he is astonished that no one else saw the same thing.
Another theorist believed that Stanley Kubrick had directed the footage disseminated by NASA to publicize the Apollo 11 moon landing. He believed that there are telltale signs of the use of front projection in NASA's footage and that Kubrick was contracted to produce hoaxed footage of a fake moon landing (see Moon landing conspiracy theories). He points to the knitted Apollo 11 sweater that Danny wears, and the fact that a carpet pattern resembles the Apollo launching pad as evidence that the film is an elaborate apology of sorts for Kubrick's involvement. In particular, the analyst feels that the tirade Jack delivers to Wendy about how she does not understand the duty of work and honoring a contract with an employer portrays Kubrick's own sense of isolation from keeping so big a secret.
One analyst connects the Overlook's hedge maze-labyrinth with the mythic story of the Minotaur, believing that a skier in a poster is actually a minotaur. She bolsters her theory by pointing out that Kubrick's earlier film, Killer's Kiss, was made for Minotaur Productions.
Kubrick's unrealized project about the Holocaust, Aryan Papers, suggested to another analyst that The Shining is really about that genocide. He connects Jack's sinister recitation of the Big Bad Wolf's refrain to a Disney production where the wolf is an anti-Semitic caricature. The analyst also feels that Kubrick embeds a message of hope in Dick's advice to Danny about how to deal with his shining abilities. Dick explains that the images Danny sees are just pictures of the past, and they can be forgotten. The analyst feels Kubrick is trying to remind his audience of the Holocaust while at the same time helping them to let go of its horrors.
There is an extended sequence where the film is superimposed over itself in reverse. By running the film forwards and backwards at the same time, some astonishing parallels are created, such as Danny walking in on his father and the previous caretaker as they discuss Danny's murder.
The film makers do not attempt to promote any of the particular claims made by their interview subjects. Director Rodney Ascher offered his own interpretation in an interview for Complex magazine:
My personal take on it is, for one, I don’t think it's nearly as visionary as any one of these folks have found. I just see it as sort of a story about juggling the responsibilities of your career and family and as cautionary tale of what may happen if you make the wrong choice. And even maybe looking at the ghosts as these figures that represent fortune or prestige or things that you might be chasing at the expense of paying proper attention to your family.

Oh yes it is! I think it would be fascinating just to see what kind of weirdness people can see where there is nothing to be seen. I'm sure I would tire of it and just watch The Shining instead.
