Welcome to 2021’s first new listening project

Going to read, then listen to The Beatles songs as released.  

Recorded and released originally as Tony Sheridan and the Beat Brothers.  Recorded 6/21/1966

The Beatles wanted their group name (The Beatles) to be used, but there was a concern that Beatles would be confused with Piddle which was a regional German dialect word that meant penis.   I guess Tony Sheridan and the Penises was a marketing nightmare.   In later years Tony Sheridan reissued the recording with The Beatles instead of the Beat Brothers.   Pete Best on drums the recordings

I noticed that Rich Brotherington is on here; he's in Robert Earle Keen's band

My niece--a multi-year Lockn' vet--and I connected especially when she took some English courses at her college, my alma mater, on the Beat Poets with a professor who was Involved. We steered toward Dylan as a Beat Poet. I got into Ginsberg and them in 7th grade--1971--a square peg in a private school round hole. We talked about Howl.

So I wrote her this about this jag:

I recall your commenting that you love “powerful women singers” I think after Lake Street Dive. So do I, but they will speak more to you being a woman, and powerful yourself in your own voice.

I’m sure you know Eliza Gilkyson and if not, you must.

So when I heard her version of “Hard Rain” on her new album “2020” on the radio—yes, there are great things still on terrestrial radio if you know the right places—I immediately thought of you. I remember when Panic, I think, sang it at Lockn’ and I wanted to grab every yacking 20-30 year old and sit them down and make them listen, as if in church!

So dig this, at a time when you can sit and listen.
