That's one rough murder ballad there.  Goes back to a murder in England in the 1600's ("Wexford Girl" is one version).  I like this one better:

Due to both a pre-existing interest and a stint as an FM jock, I've always prided myself on more knowledge of classic rock than the average person in my age group. When I was younger anyway - the internet and time/boredom have allowed many of my contemporaries to catch up somewhat. But, being unborn until 1971 there are gaps, and some of them quite astoundingly glaring. The biggest was probably thinking of Joe Cocker as "some guy who only does covers," but I think this has to be #2:

Everyone and their brother (including The Hollies, Cass Elliot and Warren Zevon) have covered this number since Judee Sill recorded it in 1971 (hey!), but somehow I never discovered it until this version was featured on an episode of Letterkenny. It's a great song no matter how you slice it, and almost all the versions do it justice, but I urge you to give this one a spin. It is ab. so. lute. ly heartbreaking.

Listening to the new Layla Revisited that arrived at my door this afternoon, and I was thinking the sound is great, reliving that amazing night, but now I'm hearing a lot of static during Keys to the Highway. Anybody else picking up that static?

this one gives you a very tentative Townshend windmill; this band's stage antics were a big influence on Morrison. And Burdon and Jagger jump right out.
