What did you listen to today?

Nightswimming is a really beautiful song. Sugarland does it, but then they kinda specialize in country versions of 80s and or/alternative. Driver 8 is a really good train song. Kid Fears is one of the best songs on that IG album every hippie girl had when I was in college.

I was learning this one the other day and I saw that Sugarland does it. As previously stated, it's kinda their thing, but the pure cheek of playing a song titled "Life In A Northern Town" at the CMT Awards is pretty precious.

Hayes Carll is a favorite of mine, another Texas troubadour. This one is his answer to Prine's "In Spite of Ourselves." I love the line "you were hitting on that stripper/'cuz you're just too cheap to tip her"

"Stairway to Heaven" was released 50 years ago yesterday as was the album known as Led Zeppelin 4, one of the foremost and well known rock ballad; often mocked by those who are jealous.

But the following piece on NPR this mornoing discusses Bonham's drum line, pronounced in the intro, in "when the levee breaks."  This line appears in more than 200 subsequent songs by others.  The article discusses some of its unique features, recording techniques and structure.  I always felt like the song captures those old metal microphones the blues guys still love.

I suspect some nipperheads ran off to their classical and smooth jazz stations during the sound cuts here.

On this day fifty years ago, rock and roll fans lost their minds: It marks the release of Led Zeppelin's untitled fourth album.



While "Stairway to Heaven" remains one of the most beloved anthems of all time, and other songs like "Black Dog" and "Rock and Roll" became staples of rock radio, there's a piece of the record that has become singularly iconic.



At the beginning of the last track, "When the Levee Breaks," drummer John Bonham pounded out a storming passage for the ages. The Beastie Boys used it; Beyonce borrowed the beat for Lemonade; it's on Sophie B. Hawkins' biggest hit; it's in Tarantino's Kill Bill — to date, that break has been sampled on more than 200 songs.



Veteran music writer Tom Moon joins Morning Edition to dig into the specifics of why this undeniably resonant moment went on to become an indelible part of music history.

Hot chicks playing hot licks.

But this and others that follow show that LZ songs, as were the Beatles's, are not that hard for a cover band to replicate. The talent was not in how they played but what they wrote and/or arranged. Page's guitar might challenge some, but sustain is a good cover. Plant's unique voice could take down many attempts, too.

I've been meaning to see Zoso; they come around here often. But all things being equal I'd rather watch Zepparella. You know why.
