In thinking about car camping. Here is the part in question. I have a Dodge conversion van (camper that sleeps,makes coffee and clean toilet, in the size of a regular large passenger van). I want to car camp using that as my "car" and pitch screen tent outside to zone out in. Anyone see this before or am I just a total jerky for doing it?
Btw I wouldn't "forest camp" again. Last year we called it "lil Columbia" and "Meth market". I ended up staying in my "van" after night 1.

Some guys near us in car camping did that last year with a VW Microbus. Nice deal if you've got it! And perfectly acceptable in car camping.

The Lockn definition of car vs rv is a 15 passenger van. I'm not sure which it is but that is the boundry line. Anything smaller, like your Dodge conversion van, is a car and is a perfectly awesome way to car camp. I have a friend that does exactly that. So you are all good.In thinking about car camping. There were at least two vans set up in VIP car camping, too; one right next to me. Works fine; the footprint is no different than large SUV's and pick-up trucks.
Just don't plan to run the engine all night (fumes).

We did tent only the first 2 and car camping last year. I liked tent only because it was(not last year though) closer, without the cars in the way it's easier to connect with neighbors, it was flat. I was 7 months pregnant year 2 so the shorter walk was a big seller. Last year we did car because that's what we needed for family camping. Family didn't happen as planned. Our spot wasn't too much furthur than tent, especially with the vip b ing crazy.
We're bringing the kids again this year and I think we will do car camping. We (husband, 3 yo at the time son and I)survived a derecho at a small fest in 2012 and I can't imagine not having shelter for the kids in case of emergency.
