I've been using my parent's old Sunbeam deep fryer for peanuts, oysters, etc. recently but it's really a crock pot from before that term was invented--a heavy cast aluminum electric deep bowl, glass top, with temps from warm to 450*. It may have been a wedding gift in 1956; maybe it was my grandmother's and is older. But 70 years is nothing for old appliances; try getting a coffee maker to last 3 years now. Which is why I shop at yard/estate sales. I've been accumulating cast iron lately mostly for my girls--both are cooks--and I have pieces that are about 100 years old, still driven daily. Took two to lockn', one had been my grandmother's, about the only thing at the campsite I locked in the car. Good finds at yard/estate sales plus some knowledge how to date them and how to restore/season them. I love my 6" for sauces, garlic butter, etc. and my square 10" for bacon and 4 grilled cheeses at a time. And corn bread molds. New (to me) trick for a large pan on a small burner: preheat the pan in the oven at 350* and then do your stove-top cooking. Gonna try baking beer bread in the dutch ovens next. I just don't use my crock pot during the summer months. But this weekend I crushed some beef stew. As the only non-vegetarian currently residing in my house making a giant batch of delicious unctuous beef stew is as much a political statement as it is a culinary one. I'm just worried about retaliation from those Chick-fil-A cows.

Not that I would ever cook chili in a crock pot (I use an old rusted horse trough named Sleepy Joe) but the start of Crock Pot Season is also the beginning of Winter Chili Season.

Beef on, Jeff! We didn't claw our way to the top of the food chain to eat tofu.
My wife likes the convenience of the crock pot especially for something to set before work and eat after, but I have been lately working on the cast iron Dutch oven processes instead, either stove-top or in the oven--I suppose the latter probably uses more electricity, though. But browning/braising the meat does so much for the flavor rather than starting everything raw all at once. However, the cooking time, even slow, is usually less than the work shift at the Cumberland Mine, which goes back to the crock pot advantage.
For stove-top dutch oven "crock pot" to keep the meat from sticking/burning, I put a layer of chopped vegetables (with spices) on the bottom as a sacrificial layer--in French, mirepoix.
But I use the crock pots (and if needed, the dutch oven in an oven) to finish my BBQ butts; I cold smoke them at <120* for 6+ hours first.
Chili? I came up with "chuck chunk chili" where I cube a pot roast, brown in the cast iron, then set up the chili with that meat (plus some browned pork sausage) and let it ride in the dutch ovens, stove top.

Even if I am crock potting I like to dust the roast in seasoned flour and brown it in a cast iron dutch oven first with bacon grease.
I have started using my cast iron a lot recently. Both the Dutch oven and the big ass skillet. Superior cooking vessels. I have 2 Dutch ovens but I guess I need to get another big skillet and get it seasoned so my 2 daughters don't come to blows over who gets what when it is time for me to give them up. I remember when my mom just couldn't manage to manhandle the Dutch oven anymore. It was sad but I snagged that bad boy before anyone else, my chef brother included, could lay claim to it. My oyher one came from my mom-in-law under much the same circumstances.
Because Sleepy Joe that's why. There is no good reason not to use a crock pot for chili. It's just not how I have always cooked chili. I have a favorite pot that I use and that's just the way I do it.

I don't use a crock pot often. I find it interesting how crock pot cooking seems to be trending again. I'm still using a 30+ yr old Hamilton Beach six qt.Crock Watcher. Maybe it's time to give one of the newer slow cookers a try. More a fan of cast iron dutch oven. Just made a rather tasty pot full of curried chicken & rice tonight in the oven. Lamb shanks are also delish cooked in it. Love my cast iron pans. My grandmother's frying pan is my favorite, though.

I really like my cast iron and use it on the wood stove which is my only heat source so it's on for months. Crock pots are really energy efficient

I've made a few pots of soup & chili on our wood stove, too. We've added a pellet stove, so the wood stove doesn't get used quite as often. I think my main problem with crock pot cooking is I'm not too good at advanced meal planning. I really like my cast iron and use it on the wood stove which is my only heat source so it's on for months. Crock pots are really energy efficient

True. But it also still weighs more pounds than I care to lift in and out of the sink. Cast iron is lovely, but I hate any pan that requires both hands to lift. I'm constantly asking Worf to either hold the pan while I scrape the leftovers from it or vice versa. I'm not physically able to do both at the same time.If your cast iron is seasoned well it is essentially non stick.
