So I think I'm going to take the plunge. It'll be my first Lockn and I'm going solo and driving down from NH. I'm a big WEEN fan and listened to and saw Phish a lot in the 90's, so this is probably something I shouldn't miss.

I'm sure I'll have lots of questions, but I'll start with the easy ones...

1. I'm probably going to do car camping so my vehicle is right there for me to secure items and in case I need emergency shelter. I'm also wondering if it might be a little quieter at night. I read that the woods camping can be a little loud. I'm a light sleeper and add HEAT and noise on top of it... well, that could be rough after a couple of nights.

2. How much drinking water do I need to bring? It sounds like there are filling stations. Do they run out? Has water ever been a problem?

3. Would it be OK to arrive early afternoon on Thursday for car camping? I have a long-ass drive and it would be really hard to get there at the crack of dawn.

Thanks, and hopefully I'll get to meet some of you there.

I usually do GA car camping. And no matter where you camp you'll run the risk of noise. Ear plugs might be a good idea. But no matter what, the sun will bake you out of your tent pretty early in the AM.

I've never had any trouble filling my water jugs at Lockn'. There are free water stations both at the stages and in the campgrounds. I usually bring a gallon or two to start, and then refill from there.

I got just the 1 ticket & parking pass to park next to my spot like the lsat 2 years. Now if you want the tents yes you have to have 2 people.

Oh, cool! I am interested in the Two Person VIP Queen Bed Tent Rental
. I assumed I needed 2 concert tix because on the CID website it says:

"Guests must have two (2) VIP tickets to Lockn’ to redeem their tent rental package.
"

Thanks, Waycha. I emailed them just so I have it writing.

Has anyone experienced both VIP and GA camping and if so, what were some differences you noticed?

The first day BBQ welcome party & Sunday brunch in a air conditioned tent. In Svip we get free water & pops. Plus your own VIP entrance. Go for it, Go for it all!!

the VIP rental tents are in a fairly quiet area compared to others and further from the night stages. The tents are substantial so you won't need "emergency shelter" and being canvas instead of nylon, provide good shade.

With just one person in the car you'll have lots of room for water. Freeze water in empty plastic bottles, cool your stuff with them, and drink them as they melt. Do the same with juice or tea. Camping stores also sell larger jugs; I've brought a 5 gallon (never needed much of it) plus a two gallon and some ice bottles. It was plenty and covered coffee, rinsing and drinking--though I don't recall drinking much of it, given the alternatives.

I think Waycha was referring to VIP car camping with bring-your-own tent, which I have also done solo.

Welcome aboard! Lots of other 411 around here especially in the "ultimate check list" thread. Note, however, that set-ups at Lockn have changed every year.

ETA VIP gets free bottled water at the stage area and in the VIP tent. The conflict is between "free" and the evil of plastic bottles of water.

Thanks all! You guys are awesome -- and this is coming together. I called CID and figured it out with your help. I don't think I'm going to splurge on the tent rental but will buy a VIP camping / concert package and do car camping. That seems like the best fit.

Is the VIP car camping in the same section as VIP tent rental section?

They put the rental tents off to one side all together & the don't park next to their tents. I like the conveyance of having my car right there.

Depends who you get at the gate checkpoint. Sometimes you get someone who could care less, then the next one wants go thru everything, & camelbacks are the first thing they will look at. That's why the call it chuckpoint charlie.

Chugpoint Charlie, exactly. I got a few beers in each day last year and they werent really checking. Come Sunday, got a little cocky and just threw a 6 pack in my bag. Of course, they caught me. Set my chair up at the side of the line and chugpoint charlied it up. In about 15 minutes no less.

I would go sit right in front of the office entrance and just smile at all the teachers coming and going. i appreciate the art of it all.

For new folks--they have really nice water stations to fill your vessels, cold well water right out of the ground.

I agree that there's really not much need to sneak beer in, but it's just so satisfying when you do! Especially when you sneak in the means to keep it cold as well.

Precisely. I no longer smuggle either. I naturally look like I am so they always check me and it's not worth the hassle to my buzz.
