I am a big fan of pumpkin in cooking. Pumpkin pancakes, pumpkin cookies, pumpkin break, etc. I usually cook and scrape my own, but fun fact is that if you buy canned pumpkin, that is usually sourced from butternut squash (pumpkin in a very wide term encompassing more than your jack-o-lantern). The BRB brewer noted that what the public thinks is pumpkin is just the spices (obviously not made from pumpkin despite its name) and is therefore avoiding it. I recall when I was in India, the ketchup was made from pumpkin, tasted like "ours" and I'm sure, to your point, that could have been any of a number of large squashes, rather than jack o lanterns. Pumpkin is a good base for a lot of cooking, in part because it does not have a strong flavor--or taste like cloves and cinnamon.

Meanwhile the "memes" make great sport out of white girls and pumpkin spice stuff.
