"John, I thought about your boomer studies last night when I went to see Arlo Guthrie in Hampton. This was at a small theater, the American, in Phoebus; it has an adjoining art gallery. As I approached, and even when I went in, I was sure I had the wrong night, and the crowd was there for a chamber music recital or an early bird special. As a 54-year-old, I was about the youngest one there! And these old folks around me were really old.
"They were mostly in their late 60s, maybe 70s, dressed as you might see them at a nice restaurant for dinner, or in the audience of a Lawrence Welk show. With scant exceptions, no hippies or avant-garde dress; a couple of teenagers (who surely saw me as old as the rest) with their grandparents, a handful of people in their 20s, no folkies in from the beet farm. I saw one couple I know who are about my age. That's it.
"I really felt like I was going to see a 'Pops' concert. Instead of an occasional interruption from a cellphone, there was a disturbance from a malfunctioning hearing aid. Instead of drunks babbling, there was a grumpy couple quarreling. Those having problems figuring out their seats were not purposely, and temporarily, impaired. The crowd was quiet; it was a sit-down affair. I now understand why the show started at 7:30 and ended shortly after 10, with one intermission.
"Arlo, who is (my guess) in his mid-60s, had his son and one of his grandsons on stage. The other grandson was selling merchandise. But Mick Jagger and Bob Weir are as old or older, and their crowds are not only younger, but, well, cooler, than this field trip from the retirement home. Perhaps that's from Arlo having his heyday in 1967-1977, then locking in the style and staying on the folk circuit, where the Rolling Stones, The Who and the Grateful Dead kept producing new music, keeping pace with the styles, working the market, avoiding staleness that the 'preservationists' love so well. They didn't sell out to commercial forces; they adapted and sell out arenas, to an energized crowd of all ages.
"Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, the show was great. Unlike Dylan's, which is over, or John Prine's, which has aged appropriately, Guthrie's voice sounded original and even better than it should have. Unlike Weir, his technique was still on. He played songs by his legendary father, Woody Guthrie, from 'This Land Is Your Land' to the more esoteric, effectively putting four generations together on stage. Next summer, when Woody would have been 100, Arlo will tour with 'the whole family.' He had a great set list and told great stories, and showed how his father's concerns are still relevant.
"I saw firsthand what the Boomer Project's statistics and projections portray, and it was really sobering. I know we can ride along behind today's seniors, but the younger folks who weren't there, and who will be paying the bill, are the ones who should be worried."

smosey wales, I saw Arlo on that same tour and was just as disappointed by the crowd reaction. Didn't bug me quite as much as when folks acted that way for TTB, but whatever happened to "If ya wanna end war and stuff, you gotta sing loud?"
Anyways, here's the original version of Jet Airliner. Squashes Miller's version like a grape, if you ask me.
Paul was an amazingly talented, and amazingly overlooked, musician and songwriter. He also wrote Gonna Move, covered by TTB among others. The 1973 album they both appear on, New Train, was inexplicably shelved and only saw the light of day in 2000, after he became somewhat famous again for his second act...in Tuvan throat singing. Paul, you see, was blind and maybe that had something to do with his enthusiasm for ham radio. Apparently one day he heard these strange noises emanating from a region between Mongolia and Siberia and was intrigued by the fact that this technique allowed for a human voice to sing more than one note at a time: a rudimentary chord. You can find the entire story here, but LSS, he mastered it with much time, effort and expense (keep in mind he was mostly living on the meager royalties from Gonna Move, which still got some airplay from stations that received promotional copies, and Jet Airliner). Now here's the part of the story I love: he entered the national throat-singing contest in Tuva, and won. Instead of being all butthurt like the French when an American wins the Tour (cheating aside) they were so pleased that someone from outside their largely forgotten region loved one of their cultural aspects so much that they rallied around him and nicknamed him "Earthquake." There's a movie about it called Genghis Blues, if you're so inclined.
Oh, and did I mention that Jerry Garcia and Merl Saunders, as well as The Persuasions appear on New Train? And that there's blues, soul, some Dead-sounding and Hendrix sounding stuff, as well as a little reggae? And that he opened for the Dead and the Mothers twice, and Jerry and Merl multiple times? Including Keystone?
I just wish he was still around. I hope wherever he is, he's smiling about not being entirely forgotten.

If only Russia was interested in what Lockn' was doing...deploy the hackers and get us some leaks (not inherently political, just a bad joke)

I could see a Lockn announcement coming later than the main tour. But either way I think we'll be able to speculate based on whatever the dates are. If there's multiple VA/MD/NC dates like last year (or Roo) then probably no Lockn. But if they skip the area like Phish did last summer, probably happening.
