Thanks everyone for the tips and support. I said f' it I'm not waiting until the 21 and quit two days ago. I have urges but just say I don't smoke anymore. My habit tried talking me into sneaking one, and I knew it was really mental. It has been super easy for me. The deep breath and thinking about Tamara make it easier.

I quit the cigs 20 years ago, didnt have as much trouble as some. It helps realizing when and why u reach for a cig. I found patterns that made me understand better when I reached. Its funny, I still found myself reaching for my shirt pocket for years, when I was driving in thought. There is always a second wind of cravings that get you when most of the nicotine has left your body. Be aware of that. I wish you the best and stay strong.

Yeah... I messed up having a few cigs in Vegas. We went down the pub with some friends on Friday and I ended up having a couple (and ended up feeling very sick as a result). I was actually craving them, it was really powerful. I need to work on my willpower and practice what I preach. If it wasn't the m-fing Holidays and finals weren't approaching I'd probably be doing better.
But good job for you and just getting to it. Amazing what we can do when we really put our minds to it.

I smoked Marlboro Reds for 35 years.
I was on Reds from age 16-28 then switched to Parliament Lights after an attempt at quitting; they just got too harsh for me. Before I quit I pounced on anyone with a Red- to me those were the best.
One time a cook I knew from a local diner who was from Turkey gave me a pack after he returned from a visit home, and I can tell you those Turkish Reds had something extra delightful in them. Woooh boy!

This. This is truth. I quit several times for more than a year at a time. And then I'd have a puff in a bar. And then I'd bum one. And then I'd buy a pack. And then another pack. And then I'd be a smoker again. I quit cold turkey after my last cigarette on July 3, 2002. The next morning I got on an airplane to Vegas with my two best non-smoker friends. I chewed on straws in bars. I gained 10 pounds (which truly seems like nothing 40 pounds and 14 years later). And I will never let myself have another puff. Not ever. Sometimes I will hold one. Smell it, unlit. I still want to smoke on occasion. But I know I can't. It would un-do too many years of success.
If you are then I hate you more than words can tell. I KNOW if I have one then within a month I am smoking a pack a day. How do I know that? Because I have quite for multiple years several times and that is how it always ends. Always. Since the initial quitting cravings subsided I have not been tempted at all. I've been quit this time a couple 3-4 years. I think I was still smoking at L1 but not sure. I don't even dream about smoking much anymore.Perhaps I could be that rare breed that can truly just have one every blue moon.

Oh...and thanks to everyone who has offered to host Worf so he can quit without torturing me. But honestly I could never subject any of you to that. I have to tolerate him...we're legally bound and I love him or something. But the rest of you truly don't want to meet jonesing Worf.

The better deal would be for Sue to go on Sabbatical with a Locknfriend and leave Worf to thrash about the homestead on his own!
Shine's comment about patterns and related habits is an important key to changing any behavior--look at the associated and reinforcing actions and change them, too. Do you always have a smoke when you get in the car? after a meal? In the bathroom? On the phone?
Back in the day, when my wife and I were looking more to cut back than quit, and we happened to be moving to a new house, we made our own rule "no smoking inside. We'd go out on the porch after dinner some, and it cut down consumption a lot. Her little brother came to visit and remarked, "I thought when you owned a house you could smoke in it."
Redirecting is a big part of the process.

I quit smoking in 1980 while I was still working at Philip Morris. I figured if I could stop then I had the habit kicked. There are still occasions when I briefly want one, but I've never given in. I think these days the cost/pack is more of a deterrent than anything; although, I don't miss the coughing or smell that permeates clothes, hair, furniture, etc. I feel very fortunate that I did quit, but also sympathize with those who struggle to beat the habit. Congratulations estprofinhumboldt! I applaud your determination and success.
