Welcome to the Lockn' Forum - The home of the original Lockn' Music Festival family!
I found that to be the case with buying dry ice. Also fellow campers nearby are happy to split a bag with you, so you can stretch it out. However, I like the frozen bottles because they keep my food dry. Please note: This forum is in no way officially associated with Lockn' Festival or its promoters.

Mr. longhair1218 and Mr. Bird700level can feel free to buy me a bag of ice this year that I hopefully won't need and I will top off my neighbor's coolers like a hero. Oh wait. Sneake and lobster were my neighbors the last 2 years. Fuck those guys. They can buy their own ice.

Fuck you too buddy, don't give in to the razor.
On the topic of ice I usually just prechill my cooler (coleman extreme marine 70qt) and include some frozen bottles with a bunch of ice. Usually need a half bag on Saturday or Sunday so I can split it with my friendly neighbor.

2. Cut pvc in sections that will fit in the bottom of your cooler with caps on, length wise or width wise.
3. Glue one end cap onto each section of pipe.
4. Fill pipe 3/4 with water.
5. Add a bunch of salt to the water.
6. Glue other end cap on.
7. Put in freezer.
8. Put in cooler.
Water with salt freezes at a lower temperature, thus maybe keeping your stuff cooler longer.
Hondo, our own Owsley, might suggest something common and non toxic that might work even better than NaCl.

a 3:1 mixture of water and rubbing alcohol
Vodka/water mixture (I'd keep this one unsealed so I can tap it as is melts).

Also I'd make a brine--heat the water and force in salt to increase the density, cool then fill.
But are we missing something? even though water freezes at 32* it will get as cold as your freezer--should be 0*. So your 0* water ice is the same temp as the 0* brine ice, alcohol mix, etc. and even liquid alcohol (I always freeze my liquor for trips). You could freeze a brick or a block of wood.
Water can't get hotter than 212* but it can get colder than 32*--right? The advantage of different materials is the rate they "melt" or exchange temps.

1. The starting temp (i.e., the temperature the mixture freezes).
2. The thermal capacity (i.e., how fast it melts) aka specific heat for physics nerds
If the rates are close, you want something that will freeze at -40 instead of 0°C (notice I didn't note C or F for -40°, that's because it's the point the two lines cross) as it will spend more time in the cold zone.

Physics nerd here - a change in specific heat results in a temperature change. A change in state (melting) results from a change in latent heat.
Water can be hotter than 212*. It’s just pressure dependent. Increase the psi and water stays water at higher temps. Decrease the psi and water turns to vapor at a lower temp. Water in industrial boilers is 650* or better but at a high psi. At sea level (14.7 psi) water is water between 32* and 212*.
