Best and Worst of Lockn' 2017 (Artists Edition)

2nd String Cheese set – really loved Jessica with the umph guys.
1st Phil set on Friday – liked seeing Bobby join in.
Mule
JRAD
Panic
Greensky
John Butler
Fogerty – way better than I expected
I just can’t get into Jim James and I thought his numbers with JRAD brought down an otherwise good set. I was really looking forward to Melvin Seals after having seen him in the Bowl a few years back, but left disappointed this year.
As painful as it might be to listen to Phil sing these days I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m one of the lucky ones and I’m just going to soak it in. Generations from now people will still be listening to Grateful Dead music performed by who-knows-who and they will probably be willing to give anything for experiences like we just had. I’m grateful to have enjoyed his presence on this earth as long as I have.

-I was excited about HIss Golden Messenger and enjoyed his set. some dude with an skinned opossum purse and a cured bullfrog neck pouch attempted to set his tent up in front of us. After about 10 mins of watching him and his friend fumble with it, we moved around and sat in front of him.
How creepy was that dead frog??

Yup, I agree 100%, I felt very lucky to be there.
When I said I loved phil.moe., don't think that I don't know Phil's singing was pretty bad. He isn't a good singer.
But to me, with the Dead, there are always things that might be 'off' during a dead show. Some days Jerry's voice is off(shit there are whole years where Jerry was a mess), sometimes they have technical issues, sometimes they forget the words, sometimes Donna is just.. I don't know what Donna was trying to do sometimes.
But the music is there, the spirit is there, the flow is there. And I felt it during phil.moe, and loved it.

Umprey's - best performance I've seen of them
String Cheese
Marcus King - he should be playing at night at like 6pm time slot at least. the guy is amazing (voice and guitar) and his band is tight.
Tauk
John Butler Trio - very impressed despite him being kind of a douche
I enjoyed phil.moe but I'm sure moe. stand alone would have been much more energetic. I hope they get to come back after their bass player recovers.
Gov't Mule and WSP both seemed to hold back. Where were the face melting solos from Haynes and Herring? I know they are more capable than what they showed. This added to the general sleepiness of the weekend. Marcus King blew both of them away IMO.
Fogerty was great until he just kept rattling off hit after hit at the end. He seemed to just want to cram in all his famous songs but was just playing the album version of them with nothing special in the mix. He also lost his voice after a while but insisted on playing 5 more songs. Beginning and middle of his set were great.
I was impressed with the Avett Brothers but was surprised at the number of ballads/slow songs that they played. Whatever energy the crowd had left Sunday night was just demolished after they played 3 slow songs in a row and it was clear that the set was not going to be rocking.

I thought someone was supposed to take a Louisville Slugger to Phil if he started to sing. WTF happened to THAT plan?
