As a musician, Phil isn't bad, and after all, being only the bass player, couldn't do much harm if he was.
He is a founding and life member of one of the greatest bands ever, and he has continued musical development since that band disbanded. He supports music. So he's earned some respect just for showing up.
He can't sing well but there are plenty others up there who can't, no more, either. And since we all know the words we don't have to listen to his vocals; just adjust toward the drunk behind you and to the right.
He has an ego that two stages could not contain, requiring Lockn to go to one, with an ejector feature for his rambles. But that was so funny it made up for it.
He has tried to upstage every one else at every appearance, and apparently paid the camera guy to stay glued on him during other people's solos.
His name appeared on more headliner slots than his mere presence warranted. But if that puts asses in the seats--cod knows we need them for this gig to survive--then it's just business.
Lots of old guys, and even dead guys, are bringing out their younger family members. Anyone have a problem with that Trucks kid? And I think it's cool as long as they are capable.
He's done some dick moves on stage but he has also been up there riding along happy.
No one is asking for more Phil, and we could all get along just fine with less, but keep his being there anyway. It adds cred and these guys aren't around forever.

Yeah or something with Bobby like this year, or like Santana in the past. Or maybe the Q. Or something with Trey. Or like a million other things.

needs deserves his own set. He doesn't need to be second fiddle to anyone. Preferably DeadCO but Ratdog would work too, though this is not as likely. Ratdog can be slow and deliberate at times so probably not the best choice for LOCKN. One problem I see if DeadCO does show is that if they don't practice beforehand it just won't be as good as it could be (reference Fare the Well)...

1) Bob gets his own set on the big stage in prime time.
2) DeadCo is the correct vehicle for a Bob set.
3) RatBob is second choice.
4) Furthur ain't happening.
5) A single Phil set with some interesting Friends and WITH A DESIGNATED VOCALIST NOT NAMED PHIL LESH is cool.
6) Multiple Phil sets in prime time is not cool.
7) The time for peaches is long past, don't even bother.

Actually, it would be pretty cool seeing a Primus set at Lockn' too!
Anyway, if they book D&C, and JRAD, you've got some incredible collaboration opportunities that would make putting together a Further group, or something called that, completely unnecessary and/or redundant.
The band leader is so important. IMHO, that is not really Phil's forte`. The bands with bass player leaders are few (although there are awesome examples), but Phil works better as a member. I think Russo shines as a band leader, and of course Jerry did (and all the other members knew there was no Grateful Dead without him).
I'm really psyched about the idea of D&C, especially if it's a Bob and Mickey and Bill and other really awesome choices they have to bring in, including John Mayer. It would be a bonus if Phil showed up to play, but I'm psyched about it either way.

I'd love to have them in the mix a Lockn', though just as part of a great four day ride. And they would sell much needed tickets, and the crowd they'd draw would be compatible. SO as long as they don't drain the budget, I'm for it. But if they didn't make it, I wouldn't care.

True, but Avetts were Sunday and Ween was Thursday. I see The Who as being on Saturday one slot before the last band like Fogerty was this past year. Which is perfect IMO.

John Fogerty solo is nowhere near the Who's popularity. The Who headlined Outside Lands in 2017 for over 50 thousand people and freaking Glastonbury in 2015 with over 135K people.
Meanwhile, Fogerty was not headlining Lockn in 2017 and headlining some festival called Rock the Ring in Switzerland where he's sharing the bill with Deep Purple, Cheap Trick, and Bonnie Tyler
