I was there. wasn't born for the first one

We left Orlando at 8am the day before and drove 30 hours straight to get there. We didn't have tickets, but I had done 3 weeks in Outward Bound the year before and had a framepack and couldn't image I wouldn't be able to find a way in over 3 days. As we approached the town, the freeway was covered in blinking signs, "concert cancelled", "no access to *town name*". We figured even if the concert was cancelled would be a hell of a party. The whole trip was hastily planned so our, erm, supplies were limited. Using a paper map (nobody had phones then), we pulled into the closest town and parked in a public spot right downtown. We looked around and within minutes found a bus that would take us to the front entrance and return us for $10. As we got off the bus, we walked toward the entrance gate, which had already been overrun. Our camp was set up within minutes. We went into the tent city and shortly passed a guy selling wares. My buddy went into the tent and reemerged a little while later. I asked him what he got and he said "a dime bag and a hit of acid", showing me the bag. I said "where's the acid?", he replied, "I ate it". At this point I will remind the listeners we had been awake for about 35 hours straight. When he stop speaking english, we put him in the tent with some apple sauce and water as the helicopters flew over incessantly and Henry Rollins blared in the background. Eight hours later, I broke his stupor and we went to see Dylan and the Red Hot Chilipeppers play. By some strange force, when we broke down camp, we walked straight into the bus we thought we would never see again. The return trip home was my first time in NYC and DC.
