I have finally decided to build the hammock stand I have wanted for years. Thought that some of you guys may be interested so I'm gonna share the process with ya. First saw this style stand at trail days over 10 years ago at the speer hammocks booth. It's heavy but sturdy as hell and allows you to easily pitch a tarp.
I used this site as a rough guide and it has a nice illustration of the plans with measurements and even some useful stuff in the comments.
My only changes to the plans were adding caps to the "feet", slight length changes to minimize waste with the pieces of pipe I had, add a coupling and short nipple at the top of the uprights (to eliminate the chance of the hammock strap slipping) and I would build out of 1.25 inch black iron pipe. Some of the comments said 1inch pipe was working for people over 250lbs but I like to overbuild so I chose the 1.25 inch.
Luckily gas piping is part of my job so I have access to a large threader and tools to make it a little easier but you can have home depot or lowes thread the pipes. You could also build out of pre-cut pieces and use nipples and couplings to achieve the lengths you need, you may even be able to find pre-cuts 6ft long
but I only really see them 5ft and under.
My total cost (wholesale) for materials is around $120 which isn't cheap but is cheaper than other stands that have a horizontal bar allowing for a reliable tarp pitch. It would be cheaper with the 1 inch pipe too.
