Way cheaper than maintaining and upgrading your own hardware, on top of hiring multiple full-time staff to monitor and troubleshoot it.
I work as a contractor for a government agency.But isn't the so-called "cloud" just a bank of servers somewhere? And in it are servers, sub-servers and corresponding sub-domains? It's always made me nervous to have my stuff stored in someone else's garage in Fairfax.
They have 2 giant data centers.
Everyone is always 'ohh lets do this in the cloud', 'we need to use the cloud'.. etc etc
I asked why would you use google, amazon or microsofts data centers when you already have your own giant data centers..
I usually get a confused look and a response that goes something like.. 'but its the cloud'

So you're an IT guy that forgot you moved entirely to the cloud and that you no longer have internal servers? Concerning the intranet thing, all of the tools we use at work run off of subdomains of the public address. For example, we may have a tool that resides on tools.webaddress.com. I don't know exactly how it works, if we actually go out to the internet and get directed back. That seems unnecessary, but I think it would explain why even internal stuff at FB could be affected.
I forgot that we moved entirely to the cloud last year, so we no longer have any internal servers. It makes total sense that anything on a subdomain of facebook.com would be broken as well.
I am not a network engineer.
