Welcome to the Lockn' Forum - The home of the original Lockn' Music Festival family!
It has been a long long time since I have seen Taj Mahal. I must have been 13 years old and my Dad took me to see him at the Mineshaft in Charlottesville. growing up we listened to his album "The Real Thing" a lot. "Going out to the country, I'm gonna paint my mailbox blue" yeah. Please note: This forum is in no way officially associated with Lockn' Festival or its promoters.

Taj rolled out from Chicago to LA with some college kid names Ry Cooder and they played as Rising Sons in the LA/SF scene. A recording from the sixties, not released until the 80's IIRC, captures their stuff. On it is Statesboro Blues.
Taj recorded it again and Gregg took the album over to brother Duane who was recuperating from a broken arm from horseback riding. He also took him a bottle of coricedin for a cold. Returned a few days later to find Duane had mastered his new sound--slide--with that bottle and Taj's version of Statesboro Blues. (ref: Muscle Shoals documentary). Gregg and Taj do Statesboro Blues on Gregg's new album "all my friends."
Despite appearances Taj is no cardboard cut-out of an Old Black Blues Man. college educated (i heard Amherst) and knows music theory cold. But he captures the OBBM look with his big hat and signature head shake. His sound is country blues, not city blues.
Although this show will be acoustic his electric stuff is better I think. He does a great cover of Giant Step (the Monkees--us old dogs know it) which is a Mike Nesmith tune, and 6 days on the road.
if I end up coming Thursday night it would only--and I mean only--to see Taj again.
