I've flown in to fests before and always packed liquor knowing I wouldn't be able to buy it late at night, but this beer thing threw me for a loop.

beer and wine can be bought at grocery stores and gas stations from 6am til 12am. 12:01 sales stop and your only hope is a bar till bout 1:40am. Hope this helps everybody out.

This is *NOT* true in most of Virginia that I have visited. I live in Richmond, so maybe I'm just too much of a city boy... but I believe 2am is the limit for beer sales.
I promise I'm right. I live in va... It's technically midnight for beer at a store. But everywhere stops at 11:45. Bars sell till technically 2 but most bars do last call at 1:30. You can buy beer at 6 am.

As of when I was in college liquor stores in areas other than Richmond, Hampton roads and northern va are not open on Sundays. Not that that really matters. Prob shouldn't need to buy liquor on Sunday.

Also I have actually spent a decent amount of time in Nelson. I goto wintergreen 10-15 times a season. It's always a mad rush when we remember we aren't gunna make it up the mountain before 10:30-11:00. SO MANY places close at 10:00. They MIGHT have the foresight to stay open late because of the festival. Best bet...get beer in cville if you are gunna get on 29 after 9:30. This goes for gas stations too. I've almost run out of gas more times than is really reasonable driving through that stretch of 64 Bt Staunton and Charlottesville.

You can't let go and you can't hold on,
You can't go back and you can't stand still,
If the thunder don't get you then the lightning will.

I couldn't say it any better myself.
