My youngest daughter worked really hard to recover from a disasterous first couple of years at college and got accepted into a pretty good school. So we went out to celebrate. We went to a local mini chain of Japanese steakhouse/sushi bar with the communal seating around the grill. The chef/performer cooks it all right in front of you and flips shrimp tails into his hat with his spatula. They sing happy birthday to you in what I assume is Japanese. The food is ok, if one dimensional, and the show is fun. I'm sure everywhere has some variation of this. There is a large dining room and a smaller room that can be closed off for private parties and such. At the end of the meal we were waiting for the check to come back and the last of the people in the smaller room, whos doors had remained slid open, were leaving. I said "Hey, that's (Chef) Robert Irvine." PJ said "No, it looks like him but that isn't him." I said "That is (Chef) Robert Irvine." And it was. The staff were all getting pictures with him, talking to a guy we know that is a sushi chef there and subsequent interweb investigation by someone under 30 proved me correct. It was pretty wierd seeing him there. I may have been a realatives birthday as they sang Jappy Birthday (I'm truly sorry but I couldn't resist) to someone in their dining area or he could be here filming something. The interweb locates him in a small town south of here. So yeah, when I want to go star gazing I go to Kanki.
