Welcome to the Lockn' Forum - The home of the original Lockn' Music Festival family!
If you are crediting Phish as "starting it" then credit their manager, who saw the fest model in Europe and saw that it beat touring from an economic standpoint. From this came Bonnaroo and others to expand on the momentum from the earlier Phish fests. Of course, he was not alone and there were others including in-town fests before. There had been country music camping fests for years before that, which makes sense when you consider, market-wise, that market already camps and RV's. And by "fest" I'm excluding the serious, smaller and more focused ones like Galax, Newport Jazz, Newport folk, etc. Please note: This forum is in no way officially associated with Lockn' Festival or its promoters.
The future of Lockn? (The Werk Out Fest)
Post by Flufhead on May 17, 2016 20:56:25 GMT -5
I'm not saying good or bad or if this is how it's going to be. IF Lockn is looking to next gen of jam, a lot of these bands will be the next big ones.
Was debating about the Mad Tea Party Jam, now seriously considering this one. 8 hours drive each way might make me think differently and I know I'll get a chance to see many of these guys over the next few years....but I am tempted.

Only problem is I don't actually like The Werks. And it's not even their music. One year at All Good they, or their fans but I think it was them, plastered their stickers all over everything all weekend. They played and I was not impressed for the amount of hassle it was peeling that crap off of my crap. I'm still kinda all fuck them about it. I should probably give them another chance. But if I see a single sticker...
What happens if I take both?

I really like them and want to see them on the major stages.
Like I said, just my 2cents and will be very curious how this Lockn pans out as to what the future will hold for them.

Well, technically there was the HORDE tour in the early 90's.

Just saying, they laid out the template for the modern fest. A lot of smaller bands have their own fest these days. Not saying it’s a bad thing, but it’s not exactly a guaranty they will ever make it big.

What template did they lay out other than being the only band playing?

The multi-day festival that has proliferated into what it is today with one or more being thrown in every state. Hosting a large number of people with camping, having art installations and other entertainment, setting up stages and sound equipment successfully in the middle of nowhere. Less organized versions of this had occurred in the past with things like Woodstock and the original Watkins Summer Jam, but Phish modernized it and set the example for Bonnaroo.
Also early Phish festivals had other acts, they just headlined.

Todays fests, by comparison, are five star resorts, particularly Bonnaroo with its permanent infrastructure.

They haven't broken the East Coast yet which I find really curious. From what I've read, they are growing fast in the North and own the Midwest.
But I agree that I thought they'd be bigger by now. Could be that there's just a ton of jam bands competing: twiddle and all....

Final lineup is pretty ridiculous for a fest of this size...All this for a little over $100 bucks? Dang.
