The DJ Paul Shugrue points out that many of us know his songs from the many covers done through the years. Indeed, his list has a few Dead favorites, including of course Promised Land.
I read a long time ago that Berry was influenced by country music, and his trademark sound borrows heavily from it. Since popular music, especially country, was highly segregated in the 50's, he is one of the bridges that brought us rock'n'roll--it came up out of (black) jump blues, with Elvis bridging it over to white audiences )"Hound Dog") and adding a country vibe, while Berry mixed country and Chicago blues. Think about songs like Hank Williams' "Move it on over" as done by George Thorogood and the country to rock'n'roll makes sense--likewise Thorogood's version of Berry's "It wasn't me" which is pure Jump Blues. Most rockabilly is an edge off jump blues, and Berry is an edge of Rockabilly.
Like Bo Diddley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Bill Haley, Elvis and Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry brought in a sound at the birth of rock'n'roll that would endure and define so many song types until this day.
