We went to a small show last night that was really cool. "Sofar Sounds is a music events startup company, based in Shoreditch, founded in 2009. The company calls itself a global community where guests and artists come together to experience music in an intimate and respectful setting at a secret concert." They put on what are essentially living room shows in 385 cities worldwide.

You sign up and then every month they come out with a list of dates in your local city. No artists are listed and no location is listed. You just apply for tickets and if you are randomly selected (?) you get a confirmation and get to purchase tickets, or not,t depending on how your local one is set up. This was a pre-purchase but not all are. Some are just whatever you feel like kicking in. Then a day or so before the event you get the location but still no idea of who is playing. You don't find that out until you arrive. They do that to keep a bit of mystery and so people won't just ignore shows if they have never heard of any of the artists. And it works. I don't think we would have gone based on knowing that Pierce Edens, Leah Hinton and Mat Phillips were playing. Never heard of them. I have now. The shows are described as "stripped down". Not acoustic but not full drum kits and big stacks. They are BYOB affairs where appropriate and the crowd was VERY attentive. You come for the whole show, not just the person you know, and you listen. Most attentive sets I've attended in forever. Their motto or tagline or whatever is "Be Still And Listen".
Pierce Edens is self described as "Boot Scuffing Aplalachicana". Highly recommend. He also performs as Pierce Edens and the Dirty Work.
Second act was Jazz Singer Leah Hinton. She was accompanied by a only a very tasty jazz guitarist named Russell Fabret
The last act was singer songwriter Matt Phillips.
Each of them did 5 or so songs. It started at 8 and was over at 10. The show was held in a downtown furniture store called Raleigh Slabs. They make tables from these ENORMOUS slabs of redwood. I can't even imagine what they must cost.
We wanted to check it out just as something new to do, a new access point into music we haven't heard before and because they are worldwide. Don't know if it will work out but how cool would it be to check our a secret show in Lisbon, Madrid, Sevilla, Valencia or Barcelona?
So check it out and see if there are any SHOWS IN CITIES NEAR YOU.
