Wheels of Soul has been at wolftrap every year and ttb still played lockn. I’m expecting both to happen again in ‘20. Not that I know anything.
I used to work at Deer Creek. Radius clauses are real but it’s kinda tricky to explain. Typically only large venues have them, so the only ones that would effect Lockn are probably like Jiffy Lube in Bristow, and maybe Hampton & Merriweather Post. Which effects very few bands on Lockn’s menu. Smaller venues like Theaters, Auditoriums, Big Clubs & Ballrooms have more local radius clauses that act more like an exclusivity contract for a market. And Lockn is prolly far enough outside places like Charlottesville & Lynchburg’s range of influence & in most cases smaller bands at smaller venues are encouraged by both festivals & venues to help promote the events. So I don’t think “radius clauses” effect Lockn the same way “exclusivity contracts” do. Like the Black Crowes for instance signed an exclusivity contract w/ Live Nation & will only appear at there venues, unless the market lacks one. A lot of bands have this at the larger levels. Another thing Lockn runs into are some festivals have “exclusivity contracts” that preclude acts from specifically performing at other venues regardless of radius for a certain time period. Some venues & festivals have more pull (I.e. Bonnaroo, Lockn, MSG, Hampton, etc...) and some bands have more muscle (i.e. Phish, Pearl Jam, Rolling Stones) to push back against these, but these contracts are out there. But I agree that they only effect a very small number of bands radius wise but I feel the exclusivity clause is enacted more often.
