New Year, New Lineup Speculation
Post by reckoning on Mar 1, 2021 21:30:08 GMT -5
Yeah they outta have him do a set with his band on Thursday Night before Marcus King & then a King’s & Strings set to close out the main stage music, then Friday have him rage the late night set til sunrise & on Saturday do an afternoon Tony Rice Tribute set with Sam Bush, Bela Fleck, Jerry Douglas, Chris Wood & Keller. Then have him do Saturday Late Night til sunrise again.

I love Phil but I really hope the actual lineup doesn’t have him as the headliner all three nights. I want a couple upbeat, heavy hitters like phish, MMJ, UM, Tame Impala, Mule, DB, SCI, etc.
I would also love to see EOTO in the woods again.

Counting Crows? Gin Blossoms? Squeeze?
Blues traveler is a jam band. They just had a couple radio singles ... i get this is the speculation thread but REM makes about as much sense as Poison.
That comparison makes as much sense as TTB doing Katy Perry A Cappella as a headliner.
FYI - Blues Traveler is not a jam band and REM also had a couple radio singles. More than Blues Traveler.

EOTO in the woods would great, the year they did the thing with Mickey Hart was wild, but a regular EOTO set is what I’d prefer. They should have Benevento/Russo Duo in the woods late night. Vida Blue or STS9 would kill too. I think Phil is gonna skip this year, I just have that feeling. I think we get something like Billy Strings & Marcus King for Thursday, then TTB w/ Mayer, JRAD w/ Mayer & a big “one off” set as the headliners each night. I could see MMJ, TAB, UM & Mule on the lineup too. I don’t think Phiah play til NYE, maybe a few warm ups before. SCI may stay off the board til too, but I could see a Red Rocks/Colorado run around Labor Day, then Lockn & a small SE tour before Hulaween, maybe Jazz Fest late nights too. But I’m with you, at night I wanna rage, I wanna hear fast music that makes me happy, dance & that melts my face and I wanna light show that gives me heart palpitations & an eye twitch.

I kinda agree, the “Rumors” Set, while intriguing & something I would see, didn’t make alotta a sense to me. It was a good lineup though so I’m sure it woulda worked but I think other bands could pull it off better & make a headliner set. But in all honesty, if they go that route they should just have Fleetwood Mac or have Stevie Nicks front Cheese one night or Lindsay Buckingham since he’s outta the band.

So if all you know about a band is its studio/radio, or OTOH its performances, that will determine your label of jam or not.

If their studio albums are 'meh', and their live performances are stellar, then they are a jam band...

To stay on topic, I hope Phil comes and does one big night, but if he wants to make it three and fill up on guests, that's ok too. I somehow don't see that happening, but most of you know more than I do how these things get arranged.

As the person months ago, that brought up the REM thing, I think REM fits the “Classic Rock” slot that we’ve seen filled by Petty, Plant, Winwood, etc... as the fanbase ages, so does what’s nostalgic. And yes, they are broken up but my original idea was more like having Michael Stipe front String Cheese or Umphrey’s for a Set. I know Mike Mills has done stuff with Big Something, that’d be cool too. I think REM would go over well, way better than Wilco. They are a Georgia Band, that everybody & their GF/Wife knows. They had Peter Wolf, Ann Wilson played with Mule, I think it could work one year.

So if all you know about a band is its studio/radio, or OTOH its performances, that will determine your label of jam or not.
Jamband is a loaded term, it’s like what’s a “major act”. To me a Jamband is defined by a band being driven by the instrumental aspects of song composing more so than lyrics. The words aren’t as important as the notes. It’s like in Bluegrass, the vocalist is not the star, it’s the music. Also, to me a Jamband has to have 2-3 guitars, a strong Keyboard that can play lead & melt faces, a six string bass player that can make you feel every note in your groove jungle & TWO drummers. The TWO drummer requirement can be waved for some acts, Fishman, Russo, Lane, Sipe, Molo as examples but I don’t like to do it. A Jamband has to be able to play different styles, including but not limited to... jazz, blues, reggae, bluegrass, world music & rock all fused into one. They can have an electronic aspect, I love STS9, Spafford & that scene too. But my main requirements are that you gotta melt my face over & over all night, make me dance til I’m a sweating mess & have a light show that gives me heart palpitations. Also, a Jamband embraces “drug culture” & the traveling drug circus they lead. They allow taping of their shows, have GA, sell “heady” art for Merch, allow fans to bring water bottles & play Red Rocks. You gotta check all those boxes. Sometimes a Jamband sneaks up on you, like MMJ. On the CD they’re just good, but in person... they blow your fucking doors off. To me another good definition of a Jamband is a band that makes their money on the road, not off the radio. It’s hard to put your finger on it, and looks can be deceiving but when your at the show & music just makes you feel it, balls to bone, then you know it’s a Jamband.

I don't keep track of Stipe onstage collaborations, but when I stumble across them on youtube, I enjoy them. They could each do some sit-ins, and then maybe all three be onstage at the same time for a 3 or 4 song encore on another band's set. That would be in the "wild" category for some of us.

Personally, I think Phil passes. I saw he had his 1st show back today at Terrapin but I think he stays there, maybe does some Bay Area shows but I think he sits Lockn out. Bobby too. Age is more than number when it hits 75-80. I would support the “Phil For One Day” idea, you had. Like on Sunday, it’s just all Phil. Start with Midnight North w/ Phil, then a Phil/Bobby Acoustic thing, then The Q, then The Family Band & end with a Phil & Friends set that is just a rotating throw down of all the heavy hitters he’s worked with. From Trey, Page, SCI, Russo, Marco, John K, Jackie Greene, Molitz, Chimenti, etc. That would be epic.
