Any local thoughts on alternative routes from Charlottesville to avoid the u-turn?

Seems silly to me to go that far out of the way to avoid going 5 miles out of the way and making a u-turn.

Yeah but its hard to tell with traffic- I picture that single lane being backed up all the way around the u-turn, and probably back past the site come Thursday morning. And that doesn't even include trying to merge northbound traffic in too...
Alternative routes from Charlottesville?

They will definitely be directing traffic. There's no way a journey management plan that includes a u-turn for say 15,000 cars gets approved unless it is very well planned out.
If you have a reason to go another way (like we need to meet up with friends coming from the south, so we'll go out of our way a little to meet up, then come in that way), then do it. But I would not go out of my way without a better reason.

True, and certainly hope you're right! But there's only so much planning can do, and even the most well organized events can turn into a mess real quick when you have that many people trying to arrive at the same time. I'm actually meeting friends in Charlottesville, and just feel like getting on 29 there might put us at the end of the end of the line- could be better to take a detour than to sit in single lane stop-and-go traffic all day
