Welcome to the Lockn' Forum - The home of the original Lockn' Music Festival family!
I heard three cuts on the radio last night of Dylan's new album, to be released today, where he sings songs that Sinatra sang. I think it's called Voices in the Night. It's so bad you can't help but listen--kinda like Dread Zeppelin. Here is a stream of the radio show; it's the first three and the DJ has an intro about the project: mediaplayer.whro.org/program/1000001 And as I've said before I highly recommend this radio show, Out of the Box, for new music in rock, Americana and blues--new artists, new music by old artists, old music on new releases, and re-releases, as you can see from the playlists on the past shows on the links. same here--except he wanted to play songs from his (then) new CD, and when he did, the crowd became visibly restless--in the show I saw, it was obvious most of the crowd was there for nostalgia, "greatest hits" and a sing-along, rather than interested in moving into new works. The album at that time--the title escapes me--was quite good despite the raspy flat voice; it actually fit. Kinda like how JJ Cale sang a fairly flat* tone but it worked (I heard that JJ hated his voice and therefore held back--and accidentally, I guess, had a signature voice!). The album was full of stolen songs and lyrics; payback I suppose for those who stole from him. Such as "If it keeps on raining, the levee's gonna break." Sound familiar? Anyway, the singing on the album was way better than the live version a couple months later. I'm glad I saw him, once, BTDT and got the Tshirt, don't need him taking up a slot at Lockn! *I don't mean "flat" as in sharps and flats Please note: This forum is in no way officially associated with Lockn' Festival or its promoters.

But actually, I found them kinda compelling because it was such a mismatched mash-up of three of my favorite artists or styles.
For those who don't know it: Led Zep songs all played in Reggae/ska style but the lead singer sang Plant as an Elvis impersonator (called "Tort Elvis"). And they messed around with the lyrics. So you had "Heartbreaker Hotel" and "(You ain't nothing but a) Black Dog."
As Mark Twain said about music by Wagner, it isn't as bad as it sounds.

And he didn't play guitar well either. Any coffee house musician can duplicate it.
Now that his somewhat distinctive but not-that-special voice has faded with age, it's not that we don't like it now, it's that we miss what it was.
And isn't that what happens as we continue to trot out old stars who do not have the chops any more? Aren't we usually--and the majority of the ticket buyers for sure--looking for a rerun of the old days, not something new?
The smart ones work back-up into the act, hopefully not being obvious about it. When I saw Furthur 2 years ago, it was obvious that Phil and Bob needed to have the "chorus" behind them (vocals and instruments). John Lee Hooker was really good at maintaining stage presence but handing over the heavy lifting to younger talent.
At Lockn, Willie failed because he was solo; Taj Mahal and Del (himself) both did well b/c they had support; Gregg could never have pulled off that show and even required the others to go into damage control. Petty worked b/c he didn't try to be the Golden Throat of 1981.
We've mentioned how now that New Riders have lost the distinctive voice, they aren't a show like they used to be.
Prine sounds a lot different from his debut in c1972 and he was what, 19? But his different voice works with his different music although frankly, if he started his career 5 years ago the voice he has now, I don't think he'd draw the crowd or attention.

Not someone I'm really rooting for, but if he were to get booked, I'd attend his set just like I did Willie's. For those of us unfortunate enough to have been born too late for the first go around for some of these artists, bucket lists are about more than great performances.

But the many "bucket list" acts that also deliver great performances makes those who can't, seem disappointing. Especially when the bad ones charge a king's ransom just to see them on the throne. I think it's fair to say, that if they don't have it any more, they should make it up with the nature of the show.
This is what I love about the small venues; they feature the acts on the way up, and the ones on the way down, for reasonable coin.
