Saw them for the first time last night with my son at the Count Basie Theater. It was a show from 1974, which was cool because I like that period of the GD and I did not start seeing them until the 80's. Individual musicians sounded real good, but as a group at times I found them to be a bit scattered and disjointed. True to 74 there was just the one drummer and he just didn't bring it. At one point my son says to me, "I think we got the Mickey Hart guy instead of the Kreutzmann guy". Crowd was a mix of older Deadheads and a pretty good amount of younger people who appeared to be on tour with the band. Lots of drunks, some flatbrim spilled his beer on me. Not sure that I would go see them again, definitely not for $45.

Sorry you had a bad experience. I've seen them twice and truly enjoyed both shows. And I can hardly wait to see them again later this summer. Give them another shot. Seriously. I think you must have caught their one bad night. The kids on tour with them...which sometimes comes with beer spillage...that's normal. The disjointed performance...that's not normal at all.

Can't really see holding DSO to higher standards than the original. You are not going to get an exact GD replication. Jaff Matson isn't Jerry etc. However, their shows come a lot closer than a lot of The Dead, The Other Ones, Phil & Friends etc shows that I have seen. Not all by a long shot but still.

Definitely not holding to a higher standard. And like I said the individual musicians were great, they just didn't seem to gel. From what I was hearing the drummer was the one holding things up. Poor timing, missed ques, and a few sloppy fills. Just finished talking about the show with a friend who was at a local restaurant before the show and she said that the drummer was hitting it pretty hard at the bar.

I mean they are good at what they do and I would see them when they came near but if there was something else at a festival I would usually pick the other.

$45 is a lot; we're at about $20 up from $10 when I first saw them about 10 years ago.
I especially like seeing a "Dead show" in a small venue--ours is an old theater, very Fillmore-ish.

Often tapers set up. That's kinda funny. But I have a couple "tapes" and enjoy adding them to the GD CD's.

Give them another shot.

DSO has never disappointed me.

And there's also a pretty good chance that the "flatbrim" was not so much a DSO fan, but more likely a local who was looking for a party.

Yes I know that there was no Mickey during that time. I personally prefer Billy to Mickey, and their music from 72-74 is what I like the best. I imagine that I have passed this opinion down to my son and what he was saying was that the DSO drummer was falling short of Billy's playing and that perhaps they mixed up the drummers. At any rate I have always heard great things about them and it sounds like I should give them another shot if the opportunity presents itself.

On a related note, I also use the term "flatbrimmers" as the plural. e.g. there were a lot of flatbrimmers up in the balcony

IMHO, I still prefer Pigpen.
