Blue Mountain and Devil's Backbone are both closer; Starr Hill is bigger and also tied into the concert business. Blue Mountain makes good stuff; try the Steel Wheels ESB. Go by either of their two locations a few miles from Lockn if your travel plans let you. Devil's Backbone is good, too. they are originally from Nelson County but are now set up in Lexington Starr Hill's "Dark starr" stout can't be beat. It's Jomo is OK. If you like hoppy IPA, Grateful Pale Ale is it. Personally, I am getting away from the hoppy ones and going toward porters; I see that you, and I know many other regulars here, like the hoppier the better. But there also seems to be a fad to overdo it, and the beers are out of balance for the sake of a funny label (as happens with hot sauces). now, Norfolk has O'Connors and its black pale ale "Great Dismal" is outstanding, drinks more like a stout or porter. But all of theirs is good. But it's all bottled so I can't bring it to represent my home town in Norfolk Virginia at the exchange. Charlottesville's "Missile" is a good hoppy IPA since you like that type, look for it, too. But truthfully IMO there isn't much to dislike in a Bud, but nor is there much to like. But better than the beer-flavored water they call "lite". All of them. And Coors. thanks--fixed it--I always do that for some reason. I like how they call attention to their "best by [date]"; the label says "Check my butt to be sure I'm not older than I look." Sage advice there, for many applications. No, one of the water rocks in the venue was sponsored by Virginia Distillery--they make a great Virginia Highland [single] malt, and own the Eads distillery in Scotland. I was looking at the official lockn site and noticed that Sierra Nevada is listed as a sponser. No Star Hill logo anymore.
Im very happy cause SN PA is my go to beer, I found many of the star hill beers to be meh.
Opinions?

I saw that, too. I prefer Starr Hill products over Sierra Nevada, but I am slightly biased as it is a friend's company, and I've only really had the SN Pale Ale--which is fine; nothing bad to say about it.
But SN is big beer now, but it really kick started the craft beer market, as did Sam Adams. Starr Hill was also an early member of the industry, and is currently in some transition. Thus I think there is a "business deal" for SN to be the official beer; it will be interesting to see what choices are there--hopefully a lot. There are a lot of great craft brewers within the Nelson County area--including Starr Hill--so it would be disappointing if any one brand was the only beer.
And too bad none of the area distillers can be involved (one sponsored the water hole but could not have its product there).

Im surprised that they didnt partner with star hill again. Seemed like a no brainer to be teamed up with a brewery near lockn. The new sn place is just outside of Asheville so they aren't thay much further.

SN PA was great long about before they seemingly reformulated the recipe and lowered the hops. Even the Celebration presents as being less hoppy than it once was. Now the fresh hop ales they put out....

SN looked at Bellefonte PA, which is like 10 minutes from here. They went with Asheville instead.

Someone posted a response on the meet and greet thread about beer choices. He stated that while he likes hoppy PA's, cannot see drinking them all day in the heat at a festival like Lockn. Prefers the standard American Coors, Rolling Rock etc. I initially balked at this...but then it made me think. Don't get me wrong, I am an IPA fan and being in MD, prefer Dogfish Head (60 minute) and Flying Dog (snake dog IPA) breweries. However, that poster may have a point. Thoughts?

Session IPAs are the solution to this quandry.

I drink dark ales, but mostly only when it's cold out. When it's really really hot, I enjoy a pilsner - the only lager I ever drink. Our local just rolled out a robust porter; they used some smoked malt, but it's not overly smoky. Pretty damned delicious, in fact.

Always had Budweiser when I was out & about but it was my second chose because nobody has Stroh's (stuff that runs off of horse shit). But since getting diabetes I had to go to a lite beer. Took a while but ended up with Coors. But when out I still like a cold Bud. I enjoy good beer, but I am not sure how I feel about anyone who turns their nose up at a Budweiser.
